Baytril dosage for ducks with bumblefoot

So technically there may be nothing harmful with expired antibiotics. However, the antibiotic breaks down overtime and the concentration is going to be lower than it was originally. Because of this, it is better to have fresh antibiotic so they get the proper dosage and effectively treat the bacteria. You are less likely to have the bacteria infection go away if you use expired antibiotics. I would not recommend it.

I use it with my ducks, but I never put in the water. I give it orally with a syringe. If you ever need to use it in the future, the dosage is 0.05ml /lb twice a day for 5-7 days, which is the same as the 5mg / lb.

Hello again. I received my fresh supply of enrofloxacin 10% liquid today. Before I start her on it, I want to verify I’m dosing properly.

She weighs 7 lb. 11 oz. I’m assuming I would round up to 8 lbs? So if the dose is .05ml/lb, would I be giving her .4ml twice a day? And can I squirt the dose into a tiny piece of bread to make it easier? I do realize bread is not good for ducks, but we’re talking a very tiny piece twice a day. If possible, I would rather do that than traumatize her any further by trying to put it down her throat when I’m not used to doing it. I’d appreciate anybody’s help on this. I’d like to start her on it tonight.

As a side note, her foot was looking great until this afternoon when she somehow got her booty off and the scab peeled off again. As soon as I noticed it, I disinfected it again and put a fresh boot on.

I really can't recommend on how to do other methods, because I always give drugs orally. Maybe @Miss Lydia has some suggestions on that. Administering orally is really the only way to ensure the correct dosage, which is why I always do it that way. I have never found it traumatizes a duck. Wouldn’t this technically still be “orally”? It’s going into her mouth, not being administered with a needle. Not trying to argue, just learning. I just thought it might be easier since she’s all about food, but I’ll do whatever is necessary and best. Thanks again for your support!

Baytril tastes awful but go ahead and try to give it to her on bread, I use a small piece to give my Muscovy drake his baby aspirin daily . She may spit it out because of the taste but worth a try if you don't feel comfortable giving orally. You may end up having to though

Sorry if it came off like I was trying to argue, it was not my intention. You can try the bread. I have just never done it that way, so I am not the best person to recommend an alternative method.

Oh, no! I must have come across wrong in that post. I never thought YOU were trying to argue! I just didn’t want YOU to think that I was arguing. I’m a total newbie. I am only trying to learn. Once again, I must have not communicated well. I guess that’s typical when I’m stressed. I’m sorry.

What I was trying to say is….if it’s given by mouth, no matter how you get it into the mouth, wouldn’t that be considered “oral” administration (as opposed to somebody giving a vaccine)? I wasn't considering using a needle. Was just trying to contrast the two methods…oral versus vaccine. I watched that video the first time Quatie shared it with me several days ago. It appears I will HAVE to do it that way, because I just tried the bread method and as expected, she spit it out. I KNOW how awful that stuff is because several years ago I tasted it. NASTY, BITTER, YUCK! I was hoping her taste buds were not as sensitive as mine, but no such luck. I had to at least try.
