BBS (Blue Black Splash) Marans - Pumperkinz

100% agree!

Oh you are good! I just am learning and want to make the best selections I can with what I have. I don't want to introduce a bigger issue down the line either. (Poor genetics, poor standards, or obvious DQ's). Like most of the locals don't care as they will never show birds.

And thank you so much for the help!
In the end it's not about making boatloads of quick cash sales for us. It's producing good birds that's the ultimate goal. I can buy #9 eggs all day long and then breed for egg color and charge 100/dozen. That's easy.... but strengthening the breed to conform to the standard and produce proper looking Marans...that puts us on the higher level as a quality breeder... That's my goal.
Helping others with this same passion is a dream come true so I'm happy to give back here among my friends that have helped me so much along my way.

We all work together to help better our Marans.

Would you mind breaking down the breed process for using this guy? I'd be interested in hearing, just for curiosity.
This guy is B/b+ (single barred). He is most likely gold based from appearance, so breeding him to black copper hens will produced 50% black or blue coppers, 50% black or blue golden cuckoo.

Do you have pictures of the third BCM? I would avoid the over melanised one unless you have over-coloured hens.

The splash caught my eye but his tail is a bit long, and due to the pose he’s in I don’t know how high the tail is usually held. He has the best face (comb etc) though.

My safest pick is the blue copper guy, even to breed to blacks.
My favourite is the BlGCM unless his tail grows in wonkier with age. You’d still get SOP variety birds when you breed him to black coppers, and in my opinion his type seems just a bit more refined than the blue copper.

yeah the splash guy I think his face and relative structure looks okay.

He's my only splash I have here currently so he's being kept for long term. The blue is really nice tbh in person I forget how stunning he is, but we have had multiple people comment saying if I ever get rid of him to let them know. The single bar I do think will be good, and I might keep him in with my GCM's tbh. There is less interest around me for the cuckoos sadly.

I was just thinking can you technically get a blue golden cuckoo? (Just wondering how that even works).

The one on the right is the third, his tail is much better, but he has more gold in his neck. My blue copper hens have like minimal copper if any. If i wanted to do copper less blue/splash I could technically.

I didn't think about this, bu the splash is considered copperless. How does the copper gene work? If I breed him to a copper free hen then they will remain copper free right? If I breed him to a copper hen, is that 50/50 shot to be coppered?

Also side note all the black coppers I have had dots besides one hen. The blues also had dots besides the one hen I got. (just to keep you all informed). I didn't know the blue would have the gold dot similar to the black coppers we have seen on wraths post etc.

The headspot isn't color related. From my understanding it's purity in the strain.
If I remember right, at least 2 of my Blue Silver pullets had headspots.

The splash is a dilution pattern. While the allele mostly dilutes eumelanin (dark black/grey pigments), the double dose also dilutes the pheomelanin (red-orange pigments). This is why splash coppers generally look just splash. However, splash coppers often have yellow/straw parts, while splash silvers look more conventional. Knowing what line (copper or silver) helps so you know for certain.
