bc marans wade jeanne bloodline

I have a pair of blacks from him, and the rooster does have red tinting in his hackles. Does this mean he is not pure black? Does it mean it could have blackcopper diluted in it? I don't intend to get into breeding, but I thought I might incubate some of my own at some time and just wanted to know if this pair would be worth crossing. Also, when "pairs" are sold, are they sometimes sold as "littermates" or do people generally keep genepools seperatated to prevent inbreeding?

I suspect that red tinted hackles would indicate a mix. I hear red tint hackles is a hard trait to breed out, but no personal experience with it myself. If you just want dark eggs and are not into showing or selling eggs or stock that is as close to perfect as possible, I personally wouldn't worry about red hackles. Raise your birds, enjoy the brown eggs. If you want a better roo, some time you can get one when he comes along and looks right. No harm in breeding what you have, as long as you are not selling it as high quality pure black lines. If their eggs are dark you could probably sell them as blacks, disclose the red tinted hackles in your auction and probably someone is out there who also just wants brown eggs and will buy.

I have Jeane birds. Does anyone have black marans eggs from a line with good feathered shanks and toes?

I wanted to add - a good friend just hatched out a batch of French Copper Black Marans that originated from Wade Jeane's line; eight hatched, two are wheaten. I was told directly by Bev Davis that Wade's copper black line has a recessive wheaten gene. I don't think ALL copper black marans have this recessive gene, however. They are healthy and beautiful birds!

Thanks everyone for the great information - I too have been scouring the web and everything else trying to find info about genetics and crossing. I will have golden cuckoos and regular cuckoos and was wondering what this cross will produce, or like some say, keep them pure. Again guys, thanks for the info. It is much appreciated!
