And you think that's somehow more acceptable than using one extra letter in one word??

Come on. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, and all that.....

I think their point simply was that the wrong spelling for the person's name would prevent you from being able to find them when searching for information on them.........

One more thought. When I do sell stock/eggs etc, I will be very upfront about where I got my lines, not so much to 'tout' the breeders, but to allow the buyer an idea of what they are getting. Different breeders are known for different things, as is true with any animal. Sometimes what is important or pleasing to one is not so to another. So if dark eggs are the most important thing, than perhaps a Coppert Black Jeane line is what you want. If Copper Black conformation is important, than a Davis line. If you want Feathered Cuckoos, a Cratty line might be the way to go. Wheatens? maybe Davis or Presley. Whites, Braden. Do you have to get them directly from these folks to have good birds? No. But find breeders whom you trust are working with the lines.

And Amazondoc is correct that even buying from the more established breeders does not guarantee the "best". And their lines change as they refine them.....
I tried to go with lines that had something I wanted and worked with reputable people whom I watched online and got a sense of their professionalism, attitude, etc. This tells you alot. This is an endless topic.

I have got to into a meeting.

And I saw some Jeane lines on ebay today, not from jeane but from someone claiming they're from her marans, Wonder if its trustworthy =P?

I would REALLY check that out. I know someone who just had an issue with something advertised on e-bay as a prominant line and it was a bad deal.
Ask alot of questions, then jump on here and run it by some people who might know something about the seller.
Do not spend alot of money on something if your are not positive of what you are getting.
There are people advertising eggs on e-bay from the Bev Davis line and its not a guarantee of what you are going to get.

Wow thanks for all that info! I got my current flock of BC marans from valentine hatchery. Anyone know their reputation with these birds? Also, (this could be a new thread)? I just made my first breeding decision by culling all the roosters but one and I know nothing about conformation I just picked the biggest beautifulist (IMO) one. I probably should have studied what the standard is first, but my goal is going to be egg color. Any thoughts?

BTW: thanks for pointing out the spelling error simply because it was hindering my research...

I have no direct experience with Valentine. I have *heard* that he used to have very nice birds, but that it is now hit or miss. As for roos, try to always keep at least two so you have a backup. Good luck, and have fun with them!

There are other posts on here about Ray Valentine. I talked to him last year but found out that he had other Marans in with his Black Coppers and then gave me some explanation that their genetics were compatible--whatever that meant. I found him rude and I didn't like his explanations. He told me I might get "Sports", like that was okay. I suppose my Great Dane and a Shepard's DNA are compatible, but their pups aren't purebreds. As far as I know, Sports are like mutts.

When I buy a something that is supposed to be a purebred, whether it is a dog or a chicken, I expect it to look like it is supposed to! Anyway, I didn't buy his birds.

This is what Will Morrow wrote to me last year when I was Marans hunting. (He also crosses his birds, but with just one color at least):

Hi Amy,

Yes, I do sell Black Copper Marans hatching eggs, and day old chicks. I do run my Blue Copper Cock with the Black Copper, so you would get a mix of both varieties. There is a pic on my website below. You can also order directly from my website.

I didn't buy any from him, but at least he was honest about what he had, didnt make up some mumbo jumbo about Sports and he was friendly! I looked for the email from Ray, but couldn't find it. I see Ray is pre-selling chicks on Eggbid.

Hope that helps you.

He meant the same thing as Will Morrow, when he told you he was penning black and blue coppers together. Black coppers and blue coppers are "compatible" -- when you interbreed them you might get a mix of black coppers, blue coppers, and splash coppers as a result (depending on the combinations of colors you have in roos and hens). That's also what Valentine meant by "sports" -- you might get splash, or other colors that you didn't "expect", because of hidden color genes in your birds. It's not like breeding a great Dane with a GSD. It's more like breeding a harlequin Dane with a Boston Dane -- although not exactly, because color genetics are more complicated in chickens, and pedigrees are less important!

Thanks for clearing that up for me Amazondoc, however, unlike Will Morrow, Ray crosses Black and Black Copper and something else. I couldnt find his email, but I did dig and find an old auction of his. I do know that Black and Black Copper are not compatible. This was his ad for his BLACK Marans:

You might get a black copper maran out of these eggs as my roosters have a little brown on their hackle and sickle feathers.

I just think if you are going to breed them then you should do your best to keep the birds bred to the standard. I dont think throwing other colors into the mix and selling them as pure is ever an ethical practice and like you say the genetics are complicated. But, to each his own. I am keeping my birds seperated and am only buying birds from breeders who do likewise.

I am glad to know about the Blue Cross, though, thanks.

I think the Blue Splashes are really pretty and might try those, too. Have a great day!
