I'm sorry Beaker didn't make it. Anytime they have that personality that shines brighter than others, I find myself rooting for them in spite of anything. I had 2 cross beaks hatch from some EE/polish cross eggs this August. The more severe one died at almost a month old. The other one has more like what I've been calling an "underbeak". His top beak is about half the length of his bottom beak and a very slight crooked alignment. I want to file his beak but i worry about interference when he's not having any issues so far. For now, I'll just keep an eye on him and he will not be bred. Any insight?

DON'T cull.
DON'T operate.

Good luck.

Im really sorry she didnt make it, but kudos to you for giving her a chance and a hope. Ive never filed beaks on any chicks/hens with crossbeaks, but neither have i culled any without giving them a chance to survive. My only aid is giving them a flat open feeder where they can "shovel" the chick feed into their mouth. Curious to know, was Beaker maintaining her weight at the point you took her to vet? The severe crossbeak chicks ive had began to QUickly lose ground re comparable size and weight to their siblings at about 2-3 weeks old. Even though this thread has a sad ending, maybe it will help those in the future who read this thread and debate what to do with their own crossbeak chick. Again, im sorry you lost your little Beaker.

She was my biggest chick out of the 9. She kept her weight on. She was about a month old I think 🤔 and fully feathered almost.

Really odd that she suddenly died then, but i cant imagine how merely filing her beak caused her death. Thats a procedure that many others do to help their chicks, plus chickens survive Much more stress than a vet visit should cause. (And Many lucky sick chickens are taken to a vet, & they survive the visit.) Maybe it was just time for her sweet spunky little self to leave. ♥️
