Bear Attack!

A couple of bear tips that the Fish and Wildlife told us to do. They don't like the smell of ammonia or pine sol. Put some into a zip lock baggie, punch holes and hand on fences and around the coop. Also, a portable radio, the sound of voices deters them. This is what we are going to do when we're away.
I also have chimes all around and tin pie plates hanging on the fence posts where he usually comes in. We have a sensor water spray we keep on plus the outside coop light.

After the attack he has climbed the fence twice, but no damage. Now we will see how the above tips do.

My bear attacks. 1st one bear took one chicken. Second one bear took 2 chickens and about 15lbs of chicken food.

Well this thread is comforting...not at all! We just discovered we have a black bear, and I will now proceed to be VERY CAREFUL!

I love living in the country, but now coyotes bears and everything else is showing up. All good things come at a price I guess...sigh...

We in Northern California had a bear attack our coop and took 4 chickens. We've re-done the coop, but the bear keeps coming over our fences and doesn't attack the coop, but keeps knocking down the fence coming for no good reason. Can't do the hot wire, too much trees that fall leaves and could ignite a fire.

We, in Calif, are in drought and my husband will not do an electric fence.

A hot wire 2'-3' off the ground will not catch falling leaves on fire ... They must contact the ground and wire at the same time, and keep that contact for awhile ... Very dry conditions are hard to get a good ground anyways ...

You could always shoot the bear ... Contact the wildlife dept ... My wife use to live up the hill in Grizzly Flats ...

A few years ago we heard a terrible noise early in the morning. A black bear broke into the chicken pen and hen house where they roost. The bear slaughterd most of our hens in a small amount of time. When we got out there, he was eating on them. He saw us and ran away up a tree. The wildlife department came and darted and trapped the bear and took him far far away. Had to start over with a whole new flock. So yes, a bear will kill and eat chickens if they are hungry enough.

Well we did contact the wildlife dept and they did nothing just told us to leave a radio on and use ammonia baggies hanging on fences.

We would love to shoot the bear, but never see him. I think we will have to get more serious with out pictures and take them into the dept and insist they do something.

About a month ago, me, my sis, and our mom were coming home from our grandparents house and as we pulled in the drive, I saw a HUGE blackbear running across the lawn. It was a good thing I did because nobody else did. We ended up waiting in the van for 45 minutes for my dad to get home from the lake where he works every once in a while. I was thanking The Lord that it didn't get in our house to our four cats and two dogs, also many fish, and that our horses (though I doubt he would have done much against four horses) and chickens are kept at our grandparents.
