Bear problem

Bears are interesting, I looked out my window the other day and one was about five feet away looking right back at me!

That must be what the woman in New Mexico was thinking in August of 2001 when a black bear broke out the window to gain entry to her house, then killed and ate her.

When a grizzly bear kills someone it is usually the result of mistaken identity or the bear misreading the humans' intentions. However when a black bear kills a human it is usually a predatory attack and not a case of the bear mistaking the person's' identity or intentions. Black bears, especially large adult male bears, just sees us as lunch.

I'd qualify the above to add "just sees us as lunch." and will attempt the meal if it thinks it has a good chance of accomplishing said goal. The number of black bear/human incidents has been steadily increasing year by year.

More people living where more bears are also living, and more people doing things to encourage bears, mostly through ignorance.
Last summer we visited the cabin in NW Wisconsin where I spent summers as a child, a wonderful nostalgic experience. However, we never had a grill outside, or any food that would tempt the black bears to visit. The people living there now had two grills right outside their kitchen screen door and window, complete with wonderful smelling grilled beef leavings in each grill. Amazing! They told us about the bear who visited close to the kitchen one afternoon the previous week.
I hope they don't have any really close encounters, but really...

Well, I don't believe the post is about protecting 'us' from bear attacks, more so livestock. And really black bear attacks are about 1.25 a year over the last 20 years so I think everyone will be ok, other than that 1.25 person...not so ok.

WOW... It was not really encouraging answers ....
Anybody has a bear proof electrical fence which is REALLY bear proof ?

Fetal black bear attacks are keeping pace with or are more numerous than brown bear attacks. The term "brown bear" includes grizzly bears, and Kodiak bears. Brown, grizzly, and Kodiak bear is 3 separate names for the same species.. Just remember that no bear is a cute cuddly Teddy bear, they are wild animals, extremely strong, faster than a race horse, and when the notion hits them they can turn vicious in a heartbeat if it takes them that long. The increase in fetal black bear attacks is in line with a several foal increase in black bear populations over the past 100 years. This information is provided as a warning to chicken herders to dissuade them from going after a black bear with a broom if the herder ever encounters a black bear raiding their chicken coop. Also a person running even in a race seems to multiply your chances of ending up inside of a black bear looking out. I assume that we have all heard of "Prey Drive" in dogs? Well wild animals have triggers and to a black bear a human running makes you look like a snack.
