Mine lay when their wattles and combs are bright red and most squat when you touch their back - it's hormonal...

There are physical exams you can do but I don't have the details and really don't want to do a gyn exam on a hen

Not bright red... not sure on squatting, they do when you pay them....they are little charmers, just need to start paying their way though...

All's it takes is a little practice...and for many, getting over the squeamishness.
Part of keeping animals, even pets, is making sure their pooper is working properly.
It's function is of utmost importance to overall health.
