When I set up my duck pen I didn't even consider bears getting in. Shame on me since I know we get bears every Spring. At night my ducks are inside a coop that's inside my garden shed. I don't think a bear could get in there at night. I've kept bird seed in the shed for years and we've never had a bear even try to get in. But their outdoor DAY pen that's attached to the garden shed is just basically wood framing on a concrete base (floor covered with non-slip linoleum) with hardware cloth and solid roof. We have had issues with bears coming during the day in the past and I'm starting to rethink the security of the day pen. I assume a duck would be a tasty dinner to a starving bear.... Am I going to have to get an electric fence - and does that even work if a bear is really hungry? How would i set up an electric fence so it hurts a bear but not the ducks? Any thoughts from the experts out there on how to bear-proof the day pen? Thanks!!!

A pic may help - the side of the day pen that you can't see is attached to the garden shed.

We have bears too living in the mountains of NC but rarely do they come around in day light. I think my dogs barking keep them at bay but at night we have lost many a wild bird feeder so now feed and feeders are put up safely over night never leave feed in where your ducks are kept. Not much can keep a bear out I saw pictures a member posted some yesrs back of what a bear did to her barn getting into her feed area. If you go with electric use it as a perimeter out a little from the fencing you have around your day pen. I have seen that done. But be sure if you have used anything but hardware cloth that you replace it with hardware cloth that will give a little more added security.

What a nice area you have for your ducks. I love it. Not sure it will keep out a hungry bear especially one with cubs.

How far from your house is this located. maybe get hubs to go out and pee the area around your day pen and coop. I have read that can help keep predators away too.

Ah the trials of living in the mountains! ;) You just confirmed my fears! We're going to be setting up a perimeter fence soon so they have a safe yard area for roaming, - maybe I can set up an electric fence around that.... And I guess it's time to relocate the bird feed too - even though we've never had an issue with it, don't want to temp a hungry bear. Can you imagine how happy a bear would be if they go in for bird feed and then see the ducks. UGH! Thanks Miss Lydia!

hahahahahah just saw this part of your post! It's really close to my back door - maybe 25 feet. I will definitely get him to do that - it won't hurt - and there's something about men wanting to pee outside LOL - he'll love that suggestion :lau

DH pees in our yard for that reason, we do still get possums and raccoons, but not coyotes.

WOW this is going to be funny. I'm going to give him a jug of water today and tell him to spray the entire perimeter of our yard - i hope the neighbors don't call the cops HAH!

I know worried me too since our bird feeders are right down here by the house and their fenced in property. But even when they climbed the fence to get to the bird feeders they never messed with the coops [no damage] After one destroyed out trash can my dh built a big wooden box with a lid to contain the trash and I haven't lost another bird feeders now that I don't leave them up over night. But they destroyed our welded wire fencing so we ended up putting up no climb horse fencing and that keeps them from climbing over the fence. This was taken off our game camera right on our spring road. the fencing for the birds runs along this. This was last year we just didn't set the date so it says 2014.
