I don't know why but my chick Pancake likes to the bedding, even though there is plenty of food in the feeder. Plenty of things to perch on and mess with, going to introduce greens tomorrow once I pick up some grit (I forgot to grab a bag of it when I got the food and chicks, bad chick mommy!). Not that she doesn't not eat the chick food, she just seems to be enjoying scratching and seems to eat the bedding. I have sprinkled chick food in it to help give her something else to scratch for.

My hens also eat a bit of the bedding (pine shavings) when it is fresh. They have all kinds of real chicken food, sand and seashells. I doesn't seem to be harmful to them.
