Bedding for quails??

There a mix Rosetta Italian tuxedos and Japanese I'm not sure which is which yet. The first is 6days and the rest hatched different days so some is 5 and 4 days as well. They are fine in the day moving around but at night they run and jump and one is making a loud noise I'm not too sure maybe its a loud chirp but it seems too loud to be a chirp the others chirp but there quiet. I'll try get a video later on of it doing it. I'm not sure if its anything scaring them the only noise that near them is a incubator that is still on for my duck and peahen eggs. Here's some of them bad pictures sorry and I just caught it on video but won't let me upload it. I'll reply in morning its 2 in the morning here so I'm off to get some sleep thanks for your help x

They are adorable! I can't even remember mine being that Size. I have a rosseta roo, Italian hen, jumbo brown hen and a Texas a&m roo. I think I know the loud chipr your talking about. My Italian hen did it as a chick and it was so loud if my ear were made of glass they would of shattered. At night as chicks they were always asleep and enjoying the heat lamp. They never really jumped around or anything. During the day they were active but also slept alot. I only had 4 at the time so that could be it since you have alot more. They could be afraid of the darkness and might not can see each other well. I'm not sure if age has any affects on their sight or not. At about 6 or 8 weeks you will definitely know who is what. They will begin mating and crowing. Also you will get eggs which is fairly soon considering a chicken takes 6 months to mature sexually. That's how I was able to tell with mine . Also the loud chirping one turned out to be a female and that chirp is similar to the song she will do to answer her mate.

Thank you they are my babies! They all 4 live together but they have chosen their mate so they are in pairs. The white and brown are a pair and the Rosetta and the Italian are a pair. The Rosetta sometimes mates with the brown hen but he primarily is with the Italian. The Italian and brown were going through a molt in those pics I need to get updated pics. Their names are junior (male white 6 years old) , cricket(male Rosetta 2.5 to 3 years old), peanut (female brown 3 years old), pooter ( female Italian 3 years old).

Nice birds

Would use the plain pine shavings, but I don’t use them til 1 week.

I just started giving meal worms and the first time they were afraid now they attack them. That was the adults, the 3-4 week olds I’m not sure if they have eaten any yet.

I give all my birds egg when I have extra.

I grow some strawberries and veggies I have given a small amount to the quail but the fat hens get most of it because the quail do not seem interested much when I place it in their pens, and I don’t want to waste anything lol

For the chickens (not quail) I will also scramble their eggs with the shells (gross haha) but they LOVE it. Or I hard boil them and cut them up with the shells on. Adds calcium.

I use only crumbles for the quails. If you can’t get gamebird crumbles you could always toss them in a blender maybe if they won’t eat the pellets? I have to crush even the gamebird starter crumbles for the newborns for the first few days I just crush it a bit smaller with my finger tips and leave also some bigger ones in there as well in the bowl for when they are ready for them they pick at them.

Or if my fingers get tired and I need to crush a bit more I use a mortar and pestle. I could probably just do like I said toss it in a blender or the nutribullet but I haven’t dragged it out and tried it lol!

Thank you only 48 out of 100 eggs hatch 8 died because of splayed legs I still got a yellow but they seem to be fixing on there own as there not really splayed anymore it can walk now but one leg still goes out abit. Thank you maybe that as it only happens at night through the day they are fine. They seem to quiet when they hear my voice but I can't be there all the time. Thank you about that they seem to be growing fast as the first that hatch is so much bigger and heavier than what they was first hatched. Last night i went in to the room to see but some chicks was sleeping all over the box instead of under the heating plate Do you think it might be the hot weather? It has been a hot summer so far in the uk so im not sure if that can play a part. Your birds are lovely

I would believe so. If they are far from the heat source then they feel to hot near it so they spread out for relief. If the area they are in is already warm then they wouldn't require as much heat.

Also did you try the treatment for splayed legs? I have never had to do it but I've heard it fixes it well and helps them.

Prevention is the best treatment: In the incubator during hatch and in the brooder for the first few days, putting down rubber shelf liner (with holes) lets the birds get their feet before they splay.

To treat splay leg, I use a piece of pipe cleaner to make hobbles that keep their legs in the right position at the hip. It usually corrects after a day or so.
