well Pearl are Flo are bantamish. Even that biggest egg is not quite the size of your regular supermarket egg. and Flo's are a good bit smaller than hers. so this brown egg is like really about the size of a grape. its small enough that i considered that it could be another type of bird's egg.

i do have some bobwhite quail around and turkeys but no pheasants that i know of.

are bobwhite eggs brownish?

i dont have an incubator. plus if its a chicken egg it probably doesnt have a yolk. and if somehow freakishly a barred rock laid that early it wouldnt be fertile b/c Conway is still intolerant of those girls. i guess i could buy an incubator...

Oh that would be too funny! Sneak some silkies and NNs under some of Todd's broodies! LOL! If only I didn't live all the way across the country......

i looked at the eggs again and took more pictures. I dont think it could possibly be a chicken egg, so what other kinds of birds would lay brownish eggs in a ground nest?

Flo's normal egg, her fart egg, and the mystery egg.

Hi Beefy - so now you have a mystery. I'll see if I can come up with some of the hilarious guesses you did on my mystery game.

No, I know I can't so I'll give my best advice on this one.

Since you said it was a ground nest, could be any bird so I would put it back and watch and see. Bird could return to lay another and another before trying to set the nest.

As far as an egg within an egg - my mom called me one night to tell me the eggs I had given her had an egg within an egg and both were complete eggs including yolks. She didn't take a picture - hasn't taken a picture of anything in her entire life including me as baby and growing up - so I have no way to document that she had not been drinking heavily or becoming senile.

yeah ive been leaving the egg in the nest with the fart egg and 3 other normal eggs that are marked just so she'll keep laying there. i cant imagine what it would be.. whip-or-wills lay their eggs on the ground in leaves like that. thats all i need! a chicken raised whip-or-will, crows by day and whipperwills incessantly by night! i dont think quail eggs are that dark.

Ruth i know what you mean. there is only one baby picture of me, lol.

I know I know!!!! Take that egg and carefully wrap it in nice bubble wrap. Then, put it in a box with more bubble wrap. Send it right on to someone with a running incubator and let them hatch it. Then the mystery will be solved and we all can oh and ahh over the new baby. If anybody asks it is a rare rock with a sorta fossil in it.
