I am building permaculture bee company in Wyoming. I teach beekeeping all over the world. have three hens per person in the home
20 to 50 beehives
6 meat rabbits

*red flag* Texas A&M White quail..........what do I do. Game and fish came to my home. and told me to have a vet look at them and fill out a permit, but did not know any thing about this domesticated meatbird.

I found a vet, building pins, but the Game and Fish does not know why they are domesticated and not game, and whay they have not every heard of the this bird.......????

What do I do?
I will not hurt the wild life in my state
My understanding is they are like mat rabbits, they do not flys, nest all the time, and are not runners...(the birds are like the size of a ginnie pig,or / 8 oz glass / the mouse for your computer. )

Welcome to BYC!

They are obviously a bit confused. Texas A & M Quail are a selectively bred Coturnix Quail by the University of Texas. Fifteen years ago Experiment Station researchers and Extension poultry science specialists sought to improve the quail industry by genetically enhancing the blood lines of selected heavier meat birds. The resulting Texas A&M Gourmet Quail were developed by Extension specialists, including Fred Thornberry, who received several eggs from a Japanese quail producer.

These birds are not native to this country and do not require a permit. All native species of gamebirds and quail such as Bobwhites, Gambels, California's, Blue Scale, ect, that are pen kept, can endanger the local native birds in our country and the Game and Fish needs to know where these birds are being raised. These types of birds do require a permit to keep in this country. But there are no native Coturnix quail in this country. They come from Japan. So your birds do not need a permit to raise.

So I think you need to do your research here on line, gather your information and present it to your Fish and Game. Here is a listing of the state offices of the Fish and Wildlife Services....

Contact someone that knows more about this bird. Oh, and stop by our quail section here on BYC as well. Lots of Texas A & M keepers there....

Good luck with this issue! If you talk to the right people, you will get this straightened out!

I know this is an old thread but I am in Cheyenne and I am thinking of getting some Coturnix Quail. I was wondering if they decided if they still fell under game bird (need permit) or if they decided they fell under livestock, etc and how the city reacted to your birds...
