My chickens rushed poor dad when he collected the eggs today and spent the day playing in the rain.
Don't think it hurts them to be out every once in awhile. You could always make a play pen and use tarp to keep em dry under it to allow them some yard time.

I use the dog play pens that are 48 inches tall that clip together. It is the foldable type. I use 2 together to make one huge playpen for the young chicks so they can play without being harrassed by the adult chickies foraging around them. Put netting over the top to keep certain unwanted birds of prey out. However, a tarp over the pen would keep them dry.

yeah i was experimenting with a tarp today, putting it on the run and seeing how the water pooled and trying it different ways

Do you have an outdoor umbrella? That can offer some protection or you can use it to hold up the tarp to where the water slides off.
Or you could take a long piece of wood across the top of the pen to give support and angle the tarp a bit to where the water drains off of it.

i'm going to do some more experimenting

i want to figure out something semi-permanent for when they are living outside, so they don't have to sit in the coop while it's raining if they don't want to
