I love zombie flicks, and I must admit...everytime I watch a zombie flick, I can't help but look around and think "Hmmm... What would I do?"
We're on 26 acres.. We have firearms, though ammo would eventually become a concern. We can grow food, but I would worry about zombies trampling it. We have food animals, too -- goats and chickens -- but....well, then there's the whole question of whether these zombies are George Romero's slow, brain-eating, undead zombies or Danny Boyle's hyped-up, infectious, bloodthirsty zombies.. If they're Boyle zombies, you can count on everything being trashed and burned, and I'm not entirely sure a Romero zombie wouldn't eat a goat brain if it got hungry enough..
Then...are their zombie goats? I mean...dang.
Also...and this is a semi-serious TEOTWAWKI consideration, and not just a zombie thing...what about the hordes of live/uninfected people who think like some of you guys and decide to head out for the country to get away from population centers. See, I'm already in the country, so now I've got LIVE, SENTIENT people to deal with!
Granted, almost all zombie flicks chronicle the tale of disparate survivors banding together to embody all that's good about humanity -- with the occasional self-serving jerk who ultimately gets killed, of course, serving to warn us against being selfish -- but frankly, I find that scenario HIGHLY unlikely.. I tend to think a carload of people might just show up at my door if they see smoke from a woodstove or a nice garden in full production, and they might not be interested in sharing so much as TAKING.
It may be necessary to turn them away for lack of supplies and accomodations, but what if they won't take no for an answer....do you start killing survivors who won't leave you alone? Do you camoflouge everything and hide the gardens to make it look like nobody lives there? Do you set up perimeters and just start sniping anything that crosses the line?
Tough call..
Oh...water's huge, too. If you can figure out how to secure a reliable supply of clean water, you're MILES ahead right off the bat..
