Beltsville Small White Turkey

Ya, JRyan summed it all up very well.

Several hatcheries, breeders and owners out there actually have Midget Whites thinking they are Beltsville Whites.
Many are well known.
This has further threatened the BSW to extinction.

Jerry Poole in IL has pure BSW (Albertsen line) since ~2000 and has been selling eggs on eggbid (now defunct) and ebay since ~2002.
I got some poults from him in 2003.

A few others out there selling this line or the other two lines, but not too many people.

I have been in contact with a major breeder to collaborate with a large hatchery, so they can distribute stock to general public in future.

Best Wishes,

BT
I also am interested in trying to keep the linage going. I have contacted Mr. Poole and another local beltsville breeder, and will hopefully be able to hatch from two linages. One from J Pool and another from a breeder from the Beltsville area who is also interested in keeping the linage going.
So now I am waiting for some egge to incubate.

How else near Beltsville has them we would actually like to get a line different from j Poole also to breed but couldn't find one or couldn't get them from canada. Have you already bought them from j Poole if not as long as we have a good hatch we would be willing to exchange from his stock if you get some from the person near beltsville

Also chicdoc the breeder that you have been working with, are their BSW from a different line then the Albertson line and would they be willing to sell me some as well.

Thank you

I've come across a few people in MD.
Some have true BSWS,
another person pseudo BSWs (Midget Whites) who did not write back to me after I informed him.
Be sure to ask them where they got their stock from.
Ironically ~7 years ago, some MW flock from UW-Madison went to Beltsville for research,
but they only had them a couple years then disbanded them.

Country Hatchery in OK has stock from Poole (Albertsen line) and possible some birds that might be these birds crossed with Donnelly-Albertsen stock.
Albertsen's stock came from ISU-Ames circa 1967.

Cirrus Hil in Canada is offering Ames line.
Descended from The stock I got from The USDA-NADC in Ames back in 2004.

Ames disbanded their flock sometime between 2005-2009.

The breeder I'm communicating with has the Ames line acquired from Ames.
But they do not sell or distribute to general public.
This is still in the investigation phase. If it works out, it would be 2 years before stock is available to general pubic.
I'll keep people updated if I hear anything new.

I just candled my beltsville eggs. Out of the 36 that we have 7 candled either ring of death, or infertile.
So now were down to 29 good eggs, due to start hatching on May 19, 20, 21.
We got 24 of these from Leah Sipe, and 12 from Jerry Poole.
We had to chuck 4 of Jerry's 2 were ring of death and 2 were infertile
Out of Leah's 2 dozen eggs only 3 eggs were infertile. We drove and picked Leah's up.
Jerry's were shipped.
If you can afford to pick them up that is the best. If you have to have them shipped to you, you might want to keep the shipper as close to your home base as possible and take your chances with USPS.
I would love to post pictures of my incubator and pictures of my hatch, but I need help in posting pictures here. If anyone could help please chime in, as I think some people might like to see my set up.

Dennis,

Where is Leah Sips located and do you know what line her BSW are from and who she got them from? I got some eggs from Jerry as well and thought that about 10 of 12 where good given these are the first time I have incubated eggs. I ended up with one pipping before I stopped turning and did so at the small end. I think it suffocated, another one took almost two days to hatch and then did not survive, and then one that is doing well. I will post a picture when I figure it out. I don't think any more are going to hatch as Monday was the expected hatch date, but I have 15 chicken eggs that are due to hatch Thursday so I will leave them in until then. I was thinking about getting more eggs from Jerry but if she is close enough I would prefer picking them up.

I just got a dozen from Jerry and I'm very excited! I'm interested in trying to hatch eggs from the offspring without a Tom (parthenogensis).

For this batch I'm starting them off in the incubator and after a week I'm going to put a few viable ones under a broody hen and keep the rest in the incubator.

best of luck to you, just so you know I think my results are of my own doing, I thought for sure at least 10 of the eggs were fertile and growing when I candles then at 10 days.

Here is a photo of my Beltsville Eggs. There slated to go into lockdown on the 17th with an expected hatch on May 19, 20, 21

Also here is a picture of Levi. He was hatched from our Red Bourbon Hen, who is now sitting on 16 eggs.
