I will be posting a video once I get it up, on how to euthanize with slicing the Jugular Vein of a chicken. Just did the recording today, since I had some chickens I needed to butcher.

Interesting topic and also necessary. I opt for a neighbor since my girls are my babies. Remembered my mom once did the pull of neck and behold, she dropped it and it flew away. Awesome laughing story for years. I did one a few weeks ago for a friend. Hard but just held her and pulled her head hard. She was gone in a second. Then they took care of the remaining. Sad but sometimes necessary because nothing is worse than to see your pet suffer.

I used to use the broomstick method. We’re not intending to eat any of our hens so hopefully we don’t have to do it for a great many years. Sometimes the head does come off but I figure at least it is fully dispatched at that point.

For those unable to "do the deed" Themselves some small animal vets will euthanize.

True, though it's really important to ask how they will do it. I have read that some vets use a "heartstick" method that is painful and not all that fast.

I took a chicken to the vet and they said they were going to use a gas overdose and that I couldn't be in the room when they did it. While the vet seemed nice, I have always regretted not seeing exactly how the chicken was put down and worried that maybe they didn't do what they said they would.

I am gripped with anxiety about euthanasia because I'm always so scared that I will mess up and cause the animal more suffering. At this point, though, I have watched my dad use a hatchet to decapitate two of my beloved chickens when they were terminally ill, and I think the next time I will attempt on my own.

Agree with everyone who says that the fastest method is best. I know it seems "nicer" to do something bloodless like an overdose or whatever, but the "nasty" method of beheading/cervical dislocation/quick bleedout are more humane.

I do remember someone talking about a carbon dioxide box system that is humane but just takes a very long time.

That was a lot less eventful than I imagined it would be. I still don't think I could do it though. Thankfully I have farmer neighbors who are willing to do it for me.

I would never, ever experiment with methods. If I can't do it myself I will contact someone who can.
I had to cull two little pheasant chicks earlier this year and I brought them in to my local vet clinic - they were amazing. The care they put into first making sure they could not be saved and then reassuring me was above and beyond.
It cost me a full £3.50. That was well spent for my peace of mind.
