You can make a very decent hummus with no tahini, too, if you're in a pinch. I've gotten to where I throw just about anything in the food processor with chickpeas and call it "hummus."

If they'll eat it? IT TOTALLY COUNTS.

Color me stupid, but what's tahini? I only make our hummus with chick peas, olive oil, s&p and garlic cloves. DH is a hummus addict.

Yeah, I make it sometimes just like you wrote, above, but with lemon juice too. It tastes good! Sometimes I whip some spinach leaves in there, too, if I'm leaving out the tahini.

Traditional hummus has tahini, which is basically "sesame butter." Just like peanut butter is smooshed up peanuts, tahini is just smooshed up sesame seeds. It's very unappealing to look at (to me), because it's kind of grey.

My favorite authentic hummus recipe is this one .

Oh, and at our local grocery stores, the tahini is NOT where you'd think it would be, with the nut butters. It's crammed into the tiny little "health food" section in the produce aisle. I guess they figure only granola-heads would be shopping for tahini?

Ahhhh... yeah my sil Bernie is a total granola hippy. She buys everything organic, local or from a farm. Lifestyle and parenting wise, she's a great role model. Not that I'd tell HER that.

Anyways, she buys her kids that sunflower butter and organic peanut butter. I didn't know they made 'other butters'. Guess I should go shopping

I seriously NEVER would have known about tahini if I hadn't ever looked up how to make hummus. And I've never used it for anything else. I don't know how something that makes hummus taste so good can taste, on its own, quite so much like hammered death, but it does.
