Bento Box Fever!

I would say 3/4 of the stuff I want is out of stock.

Has anyone tried the egg molds? How does that work as a hard boiled egg if you place it in cold water?

ME TOO. Particularly the Clickety-Click stuff. I got most of that from an Ebay seller. What they have in stock right now is some Putifresh boxes (which are nice) and the Ten Mari sets, which last time I looked, were available with all the pieces you'd need, in both pink and blue polka-dots.

They DID have some Clickety-Click tight-seal boxes, which I went ahead and got, since I have the other Clickety-Click stuff from Ebay.

Their stock runs out FAST, and then you have to wait for them to re-stock, and basically stalk the site every day hoping to see what you're looking for back on the shelves. OR, if you know someone in CA with an actual Ichiban Kan store near them, things are usually available there. The online operation seems to run independently of the storefronts.

J-List always has things in stock, because they're shipping directly from Japan, but their prices are higher, shipping is higher, and you have to wait a long time for shipping. But they do have things you can't find anywhere else.

I think the puti-fresh chopsticks were out of stock. All of the Natural Color stuff was too. I signed up to receive their email updates. I'm sure I'm not done purchasing from them!

So here's Alex's lunch for tomorrow, his first in his new Totoro bento box:
Totorobento2.jpg

Rice patties (sushi rice cut into circles then sauteed) with boca burgers cut to fit, cheese shapes (the face is made from colored sprinkles

) watermelon chunks and crinkly carrots. He'll have yogurt and whole grain crackers for his snack.

I love that Totoro box. And hey--I'm pretty sure that "rice patties" as you've defined them here are "yaki onigiri," no? Do you brush them with soy sauce as you're sauteeing them?

The Manga Cookbook doesn't actually give them a Japanese name like they do for most recipes. Not sure why. They just call them rice burgers. I didn't use soy sauce. The book recommends a little teriyaki in the pan. I will try one or the other if he likes them. They use them in the book as a replacement for hamburger buns. I made them small to fit in the box.

Well, the box was a hit with his lunch room neighbors. But he only ate the watermelon. He said the rice boca burgers tasted fine but needed to be warm. The cheese got mushy or something. Sigh. He ate the burgers for a snack when he got home and the carrots with his dinner. He's getting molded eggs and who knows what else tomorrow. I guess I should go deal with that.

Woot! Just got an email that my Ichiban Kan order shipped.
