I just got my sister's bento box today, had to look at it first. I then called her, in Florida, as I started to have second thoughts as whether she would like it? I told her about it and am sending her a link to this thread so she can see what all she can do with it. She said, it sounded like she would love it. I hope she does as she is very special to me. Thanks so much for all the help here. thanks for the hummus info. I have the ingredients here to make my own. charge on!!

If you like dip-type stuff, and you like chickpeas, you will love hummus. You might also try baba ganoush (sp?).

Sometimes I blend other things into hummus, like pureed spinach or carrots. That's a really good way to slip some veggies into kids.

I forgot to mention tahini earlier--"real" hummus includes tahini (sesame seed paste), but you can make a perfectly serviceable version without it.

Ditto for me! Also, Bella is such a cute kid- I am a sucker for child/bento pics. Here are a couple. My DD Genevieve

So, I dont have a pic of it, but yesterday I sent Dominic to school with a bento filled with leftover sushi rolls from the night before. He said all of his friends were grossed out- it was great!!!

I put in a tiny cuke sauce bottle filled with soy sauce and some gari for good measure. He also got a string cheese cut into bite sized bits, carrots sticks with dip, a un-shaped hardboiled egg, a turkey provolone sandwich, fruit skewers with apple grapes and blueberries, and two oreos. He ate it ALL

Hooray for "eating it all!" Bella has been on some kind of strike this whole week, even with the lunches that SHE packs herself. She's bringing them home darn-near untouched, proclaiming, "I'M SO HUNGRY!" as she gets into the car after school.

If I scold her, she'll eat her lunch as an after-school snack. She claims she "doesn't have time" to eat her food. I'm saying, "NONE of it?" Augh.

Genevieve is adorable. Like, toothache-inducing adorable, with that smile! And I love her name. Bella is, of course, wildly jealous of that name, since that's the name of the main "dancing Princess" from The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

NP: Dominic pulls that stunt too!! They must have both read the handbook "How to Thwart your Mother's Best Intentions"

Genevieve seemed like such a unique name, and I swear not a year after I had her that Barbie Princess thing came out and I was like - here we go- there are going to be 40 Genevieves in her school. Didnt happen though- and she LOVES the fact that she is "named after" a Barbie

Bella really has the most amazing eyes!! You must hear that all the time. Anyway, I will cross my fingers for you that the "not enough time to eat" phase passes quickly!

Yeah, how did I lose the eye genetics contest? My brown ones are supposed to be dominant!

But yes, I am a sucker for that face.

I'm still a little floored by the miracle of the whole, "I have a child" thing.

Here's our effort to simplify, and respond to the "I don't have time to eat" complaint. This is a very small amount of food, but should be enough IF she eats it. Which she SHOULD, since she directed the entire menu.

They don't have time to eat the cute lunches! When I was in grade school, everybody had to go to the cafeteria at lunch 1,2 or 3, and sit at a table with the rest of the class, and eat our lunches before going to recess. Sheesh, almost sounds like gradeschool was a jail house!

Just so you know, I have been much better about packing my own lunches since I started reading this thread. I have researched and looked for ideas too.
One recipe, that I had today for my lunch was a wasabi, tuna, cabbage salad.
I love all three ingredients, so I really enjoyed it. I started off trying to make Rachel Ray's pinwheel sandwich. Found Here . Then I decided I liked the taste of the tuna with the wasabi dressing, and that cabbage sounded better than lettuce.

So now I just pile in some cut up cabbage, put the tuna in one part of my box. Get the dressing ready in the little container. At school, I dump the tuna on the cabbage and pour the dressing over it all. It is so good, a bit spicy because I am too generous with the wasabi paste, but crunchy and excellent.

Thanks for all of the wonderful ideas.
