Best breed for a pet?

And some of the best pets are mixed breeds. For pets, you're more interested in the personality of the individual bird than appearance or breed characteristics. However, individual personality usually doesn't make itself known in a day old chick.

I have an amazingly sweet bantam araucana who likes to sing while being held. I have a silkieXcochin who always wants to hop into my arms.

Bantams...The thing is, I have two cats. They're not great hunters, but they do hunt birds and anything else that moves around. Is a bantam still big enough that it'd probably be safe? I don't plan to put them in a room together and ignore them, but I'd rather have a chicken big enough to fight back if they try anything. (They can be remarkably good at getting into places and cages they shouldn't.)

Large, dual purpose birds make the best pets, since they tend to be docile. Cochins were mentioned - good choice. If it's an outside pet then other, medium birds, like Barred Rocks or A-lorps could do nicely.

If you're considering an inside chicken as pet, then first you should know they have medication for that.

If, after visiting your nearby shrink, you are still keen on an indoor chicken, then you must get used to the idea of a large bird roaming around your house. This leads to all sorts of wacky happenings, like diapers-on-chickens and sharing your popcorn over TV.
It will surely test your tolerance for the ridiculous.... not to mention the sublime.
