Best breed for child's pet and egg laying (in a small space)?

I have bantam cochins and rosecombs... both of which are small and docile for kids. But, my son's absolute favorite is an oegb hen he named, Mommy

I was honored.

He feeds her out of his hands and she follows him around. I think the fact that she is so tiny, he cannot resist her. And she is so athletic typed and agile, that she has no fear of being held. She hops on his lap, runs across him and is snatched up by him and dropped again all in a matter of seconds (my son is 2) This would be stressful for most breeds... not her. She's a feisty little thing and also top on the pecking order

My vote is for "Bantams", regardless of the breed, they are the best for small humans to handle. I have a "variety" pack and the varied personalities are thrilling to have. The silkies are sweet but seem pretty dopey. I have a little, tiny Japenese girl that falls asleep in my daughters lap. And, then a Polish that is mouthy and the top of the pecking order, but loves a good belly rub. My Rosecomb is turning out to be beautiful and full of personality. They are all sooooo cool!

To me, this thread sounds like EVERY breed is great!

Don't we all just love our winged friends!
Just get a variety pack and be done with it! But, DEFINITELY Bantams - the little girls are MUCH easier to handle.

Standard brahmas are very quiet and very sweet. Very big tho. Orps are my fav and rocks are friendly but not as friendly as Ginger (my orp). Silkies are just plain goofy. SO MUCH PERSONALITY!!

we are getting our first chickens in may or june from our local blue seals store. we have narrowed it down to barred rocks, silverlaced wyandotte's, and ameraucana's. we are getting 8 , i think. i have read what everyone says and will definately get some barred rock's, what does everyone think of the other two breeds i mentioned. we have two daughters, ages 8 and 7 and they will be very hands on. i not only want them to be docile, but good layers, too. thankyou

My kids LOVE our Silkies. They are sweet, easy to catch and will sit in the kids laps and snuggle for long periods of time. This pic says it all. These are the two who started the Silkie craze at our house. We have three new coops, moved the old one and have more planned lol. Be careful.

The lap dog of all chicken breed !The silkie

Or showgirls and though ugly the Turkmen/naked neck dorking Orpington and modern game

Note: one modern game rooster for all hens and no other breeds can be kept with them
But I mostly recommend silkies the most though
