Leghorns and some of the Leghorn cross-breds are egg machines. They tend to being flighty, nervous, and can fly; they are very efficient with feed; they do well in confinement; and the eggs are white. Leghorns are what I used to have in high school; I got young cockerels for free since the local egg operation didn't want them and tended to drown them otherwise; and I raised them for broilers in the backyard - they aren't good meat birds but if they're living off what there is to eat in the backyard then they are cheap food.
