We currently have 12 silkie chicks aged 5/6 weeks old. We want to add some sure pullets to them now before they go outside together. I have a few breeds to choose from that are available in my area. I’m not sure which ones would be best. Suggestions? How do we mix them together? We are new to this.

We don’t necessarily need a lot more eggs just would like to supplement the silkies. All of the ones below are roughly the same age.

1- Barred rock
2- red sex links
3- buff orphingtons

Are you certain you will be getting hens? If so than I think any of those breeds will be fine. If you might accidentally get roosters I’d be worried about having large fork with bantams, since silkies are usually bantam/small fowl. Do note that Sexlinks are like the Great Danes of the chicken world. They may do many eggs and it takes a toll on them. They don’t usually live as long as other breeds.

I am hoping to be certain they would be pullets. If not the roosters would have to go as we would keep the silkie roosters over the others. I’m not a huge fan of the red sex links mainly because the ones I have been around were jerks.
