Best chicken for little kids?

I agree with you folks that kids need germs to build a good immune system but the liability concerns are about the folks that are not familiar with chickens. Some folks can get really weird when it's their kid involved. I saw a young woman go ballistic and start screaming about rabies when a friendly dog jumped on her daughter and scratched her arm (barely) with it's nail. When walking my leashed dog at the park, a woman who was a football field away from me, looked at us and snatched her baby from it's carrier and jumped up on a picnic table, covering the baby with her body like I was sending a werewolf after her. Suggest at a restaurant that parents not let their kids run around screaming and disturbing everyone else, and you'll get treated like an ax murderer. The sad fact is, this is a sue happy world, and common sense is getting scarce. After all, it is deemed necessary to put a disclaimer on a car shade screen, not to drive with it in place. Some folks need to be protected from themselves.

Congrats! :woot I'd seriously be into lurking on a chat thread dedicated to this project. I think it would be a great resource for others that might want to do something similar. Plus we get to cheer you on through the process :clap

I really hope I didn't make you feel like I was needing answers to my questions. Thank you for sharing so much of this with us when all you asked was a breed question. And adding https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/conservation-priority-list#Chickens as a possible resource to help choose your breed.

By the sounds of it you've been off to a great start. You're over all attitude has been awesome with complete online strangers. I think your fund raising will go well! Maybe have a drawing set up where each person that donates will get the chance to name one of the girls! Also maybe include game cameras as part of the housing budget. It could help give an added education point from a hen's eye view as well as pictures (because we all <3 fluffy butt pics!) for future fund raising endeavors and social media.

Best of luck with this grand endeavour and warm fluffy butt wishes to you and all those involved!

Why stop at game cams? You could set up ip cams, livestream the coop and run even at night "people will watch" and livestream on youtube. You would be able to collect ad revenue and get donations for the upkeep, not to mention make some hen stalkers happy.:)

thanks guys for everyone’s support!!
And cameras are a great idea!! We aren’t starting this project til April but we wanted to plan ahead but I’ll get pics up (if I can remember lol) ASAP

I’d suggest silkie crosses(to make bigger for handling), silkies, and buff Orpingtons. I have seven nieces/nephews and they love to catch and cuddle with the chickens and the silkies and buffs have always been the favorites because once they’re caught they’ll not fight to get free as bad and some actually like it. I love kids being able to learn to handle small animals.

Another funding/sponsorship idea, contact local feed stores as well as manufacturers to see if they'd be willing to help. In exchange can post on the coop "poultry in the park proudly sponsored by" advertising. For a flock of 8 that are 100% confined a 50 lb bag of feed can go for 2 weeks to a month depending on breed, size and life phase. If you're able to get the feed brand the person who will be raising them from the beginning could benefit as well if the sponsor would be willing to provide feed from the start. Plus it would help reduce stress by not having to switch feed once they are moved. Things like bedding material can be stored for long periods in the right conditions. I'd imagine that would be something you could collect and store all year round.

You can also look at sponsors for other coop supplies from building materials to food and water dispensers. And who knows. Maybe can have one of those premade storage shed places donate a small display used shed for storing feed and bedding.

One other coop supply option I would recommend, an automatic pop door. We use one that is solar powered and has a timer that is set. We change it every season to allow for maximum in/out times. That was our biggest luxury.

That gave me another idea: you know how at some amusement parks when you ride the roller coaster a camera snaps pics of everyone during the ride, and you have the option to buy the pic after you get off the roller coaster? Chicken pics might be a win too!

And for sure, we are gonna need a live feed "chicken cam". Like zoos and such do.:pop
