I am new to chickens and ducks as well! I love my Indian Runners, they can not fly and are so docile. I had a dinner party last night and Rosie (my 8 week old female runner) did laps around the party sitting on laps and nibbling on treats my guests had for her (chopped up grapes, her favorite treat). She is so wonderful we decided to get her a playmate, Lilly is 4 weeks old and she is a dream as well! They are prolific egg layers (I actually don't know what I am going to do with all the eggs) The get along well with my chickens and they all cuddle together at night (Rosie and Lilly are sleeping with the chickens in the coop until it get warmer outside). They are vocal (especially females) but their quack is not nearly as loud as some geese. I live in the city and my neighbors live less than 200ft away from their coop and they say they cant hear them at all...actually the wild birds that hang out in our yard are louder.
If you do decide to get ducks I would recommend getting them as young as possible, I bought Lilly when she was already a few weeks old and imprinting took awhile. She warmed up to us within a few days, but she was also not exposed to a lot of sunshine and given green leafy vegies at the breeder so her coloring is not a bright as Rosie's (see pic below, Lilly is the smaller duck).
A few reasons I love Runners:
Cuddle bugs- they love to cuddle!
Winter Hardy
Prolific Egg layers
can not fly (i wont loose them in the fall)
Kid friendly- nibble at your fingers, but only love bites
Look funny when they walk- they look more like penguins when they follow me around the yard!
Which ever breed you decide they are all wonderful and be sure to post pics!!
