Best ducks for eggs?

Dave Holderread says line matters more than breed. Look for a breeder that works hard to maintain and improve laying ability in their birds and let them help you choose. Holderread Waterfowl Farm is always an excellent choice (breeds of choice might include Runners, KCs, Welsh Harlies, Magpies--they don't carry anconas any longer--Boonduckers has their former stock & will be selling babies in Spring), but there are others who work on productivity.

As someone else pointed out, it's a good idea to take other factors into account--how well they convert their food to eggs, how hardy and sturdy they are, how much pasture or swimming water they need, whether their wings need clipping (most egg-laying strains don't), whether the extra males can be converted to meat (if that's something you want to do), whether they can raise their own young, and even whether they are readily sexed at hatching (welsh harlequins pass this test).

Good luck & enjoy!
