There's a guy near Claremont, NC who sells chicks and started pullets. His pullets are 18 weeks old when he sells them for about $6 each. He has black sex links, leghorns, some kind of Barred Rocks, and Gold Comets. I've heard that the GC's are sex links of some kind. They're a hybrid of the Rhode Island Red and something else. Great, great layers! We have 19 pullets we bought from Shooks Poultry over the past ten months. 6 are 10 months, 6 are 8 months, and 7 are 6 months. The 'Youngsters' as we call them just started laying in the past two weeks and for the past week or so we've been getting from 16 to 19 large to jumbo brown eggs each day. And the GC's are very people friendly as well as pet friendly. We have a big old boxer who comes out with his milkbone and lays down in the middle of them when we let them out in the yard at the end of the day to graze and they're all over him trying to steal his treat.
If you can find them locally they're the best.
