Hello everyone! I've recently moved to eastern Oregon and am looking to start up an egg business. That being said, I am curious as to what breeds do the best in the heat as summers can get pretty hot here? Thanks in advance!

Hey There,

As long as you don't get feathered-legged hens, (which are poor layers in the summer), there are a majority of breeds suitable for your needs. Here is a small list I put together as for suggestions:

Black Australorp's as someone, BlueBaby, had mentioned above. They have clean legs (without feathers) and do not have an excessive amount of feathers on their bodies. The only problem I have with the breeds itself, minus hot weather tolerance, is that they aren't on my strongly suggested list. (A bit more aggressive).

Buff Orpington's... They are SO SWEET. I rate them as the "perfect starter breed". Docile, pretty to look at, and reasonable layers. My first hen and my first rooster were both Buff's!

I also really like Salmon Faverolles... Sadly, yes, they do have feathered legs but are one of my favorite breeds! Docile, talkative, great layers & very motherly (I hadn't had a non-brooding one yet!!) They are good in hot weather.

Rocks, (Partridge Plymouth and barred). I have the Partridge. Very sweet and entertaining- just a bit timid.

There you go, please fill us in when you decide. God bless and have fun on your journey!

On the Australorps on aggressiveness, I can't say much about them if they are the hatchery ones. Mine are the breeders ones, and they do come in more than just the black color. I have no problem with mine. My Blue Australorp rooster has never tried to attack me, but he still takes good care of his hens.

Ah yes, mine are hatchery. Probably plays a part. I know they come in different colors, but I mentioned the only color I had experience with. ;)
