Hey There,
As long as you don't get feathered-legged hens, (which are poor layers in the summer), there are a majority of breeds suitable for your needs. Here is a small list I put together as for suggestions:
Black Australorp's as someone, BlueBaby, had mentioned above. They have clean legs (without feathers) and do not have an excessive amount of feathers on their bodies. The only problem I have with the breeds itself, minus hot weather tolerance, is that they aren't on my strongly suggested list. (A bit more aggressive).
Buff Orpington's... They are SO SWEET. I rate them as the "perfect starter breed". Docile, pretty to look at, and reasonable layers. My first hen and my first rooster were both Buff's!
I also really like Salmon Faverolles... Sadly, yes, they do have feathered legs but are one of my favorite breeds! Docile, talkative, great layers & very motherly (I hadn't had a non-brooding one yet!!) They are good in hot weather.
Rocks, (Partridge Plymouth and barred). I have the Partridge. Very sweet and entertaining- just a bit timid.
There you go, please fill us in when you decide. God bless and have fun on your journey!
Regards,
-Angry Hen
On the Australorps on aggressiveness, I can't say much about them if they are the hatchery ones. Mine are the breeders ones, and they do come in more than just the black color. I have no problem with mine. My Blue Australorp rooster has never tried to attack me, but he still takes good care of his hen.
