Best Goat?..

Shoot I wanted to reply, but it seems that everyone has taken the words right out of my fingers! We have the complete assortment, ND, Nubian, Pygmy, Cashmere (spanish) and we get them soley on what pleases us on that particular day. This week we probably with get a Sannen/Nigerian cross, and one of our Cashmeres is pregnant from a Lamancha... I kinda hope that the babies have ears though!

Have a great day! Chris

I love small Nubians knee high with huge ears they are my favorites with LaManchas (No Ears ) a very close second. Both breeds are very friendly and easy to get along with other animals. Both are also great milkers!

If you want to check it out you can try New Holland Market sales on Mondays, I hear they sell hundreds of goats on any given week of all shapes sizes and colors. they start selling them and sheep around 8:30 am.Or Middleburg Livestock Sale on Tuesdays this is the one I normally go to they have any where from a few dozen to 60 goats normally on a week. It is a lot smaller but there is some nice stuff there and depending on the breed and sex prices are usually between $25 for Pygmys to $150 or so for large meat goats and milking nannies. They start selling goats at 3 pm usually. They also have a small animal, birds, poultry, rabbits in the morning starting at noon. Most of these goats would be non regs so if that is what you are looking for you will want to find breeders in your area. Best place to track them down it seems is in the fall at the local fairs.

Chirpy I would love to have your NDs they are just stunning. I a wether so bad for a pet, just have not made the plunge on him yet.

Thank you! We love them dearly, they are such characters. They were the goats that I got first and that my husband (who didn't want any goats) fell in love with. He thinks they are the most wonderful animals on earth because they have such outgoing personalities... and get into everything.

I had a chance to buy a ND bill at market he was so cute. he looked like this little stuffy with his beard the drug on the ground between his front legs and his curled horns. I wanted him so bad. While hubby and I were arguing over him they sold him $25. Needless to say I cried.

And Hubby nearly walked home all 60 miles! After a lot of yelling in the parking lot I finally unlocked the door and let him in the car.

We have raised these for 2 years. Besides being beautiful to me, they produce a lot of meat. In Texas, there is a great market for them. You would need to check your area to see about a market. Here in East Texas, one acre can handle 6 does and their babies. We free range except in winter, of course. Also, because they are a heavy goat they are not as prone to jump really high. We have some stumps in the pasture that are about 3 ft high. Once these get to be over 3-4 months they don't even jump on that anymore. Mostly they play on low logs we have for them. We had "brush" goats as a kid and those guys would jump on to of the cars. A 3 ft fence with a row of barbed wire at 4ft keeps them in with no problems. My kids show them in 4H and they have wonderful dispostitions. My 7 yr old can lead our 80lb wether with no problems. Full blooded boer goats get large, with bucks reaching as much as 300lbs. But a boer cross can be a lot smaller.

We also have 2 Saanens for milk. I love them also. Dairy goats and meat goats are completly different. Everything from trimming hooves to weather prefrences are different.

As you are getting started, ask a lot of questions and go to a lot of websites.
