hello everyone,
i am looking into several breeds of chickens to start my own backyard flock and i would like to include some dark cornish. i have researched them extensively and am learning that different "strains" from different hatcheries produce different results. my goal for the cornish is a good meat bird and i like their foraging capabilities and they are good mothers. i am also aware that they are not very good layers. on average producing <150/eggs per year. but i still would like to include a few into my flock. i dont want show birds, but nice looking birds are a plus.
My questions is which hatchery offers the best strain? for a meaty bird with good foraging capabilities and moderate egg production. ive read cackle and ideal produce the bigger birds while the ones from Mcmurray tend to be better layers they tend to be smaller.
any input or experience would be great..
