Best Hot Weather Advice!!!

A swamp cooler can be as simple as four 1x4's or 2x4's, stapled together into a picture frame shape, placed over a box fan, with chicken wire stapled over each side of this frame. Just put some hay or straw or whatever, between the layers of chicken wire, wet the straw thoroughly, and place over box fan. Endless variations possible. I'm sure some bleach in the water would be smart.

I haven't tried it, but am considering it, despite our high humidity.

You don't buy them, as far as I know, you build them.

OK, let's say you have a box fan that is 18" by 18." So you cut four 2X4 boards 18" long. Now lay them out into a box shape, so you have an 18" by 18" outside dimensions frame, after you have nailed them or stapled them together. Now there is a space inside the box that is about 3" deep, because a 2x4 is really 1 5/8" by 3 5/8". Staple a piece of chicken wire or hardware cloth, whatever you have, over one side of this frame. Turn it over and lay a bunch of hay or straw, or whatever you have, over the wire. Lay another piece of chicken wire, or whatever, over the frame, and staple it to the other side of the frame. Mix up some water and bleach, and wet the straw well. Mount over box fan and plug in.

Does that make sense?
