Best Housing for Geese?

I had geese once. 3 White Chinese. 1 male, 2 female. Loved them so much. Raised them myself. They bonded to me, but as they grew older only the male remained sweet. On the rare occasion that both females were away from the male, he would enjoy being petted and sometimes held. But when the "girls" came around watch out because he too would attack!

We kept them in our barn at night in a chainlink dog kennel beside the horse stalls.
I would not have been comfortable leaving them out all night.
When I decided to get chickens the geese went on the rampage.
The female geese would grab a chicken and literally throw it up into the air! Eventually all of the chickens were very afraid of the geese, so I found someone who wanted egg laying geese.

I still miss them sometimes.
Now that I have ducklings I keep calling them geese by accident.

Lisa, relax.. I know what you are saying and what you meant..

and yes geese are a deterrant.

any predator is very selective about what it is going to attack..
He does not want to get injured in the process of getting a meal..

that is why lions go after the baby buffalo instead of the full grown bulls if they have a choice..

no matter what you say, there will be certain people who will find issue with what you say,, even to the point of faking that they do not understand you... it is like they are nine years old..

yes, thank you jvls1942

I appreciate the kind words of support. I didn't realize this would be such a big issue! When I posted specifically about using other birds as hawk deterrents, I got many positive and helpful replies, but for some reason on this thread where I asked specifically about housing, people seemed to be a bit contrary.

Anyway.. Hoosiergirl40, thank you also for your feedback. That is good info and a good perspective and answers my original question. I am also hoping that if I get baby geese and raise them around the chickens from the beginning that they will be less likely to attack them. Though, I realize this is a risk with larger, aggressive birds like geese and I have heard that from some other people too.

I for one am really enjoying this thread and all the information that is coming out. I have seen the premise of "guard geese" debated on here before, and it always brings up differeing points of view; but I think this thread has been the most informative of any that I have followed

If you want them and you will take care of them and feed -then get them....dont let anyone deter you!!!!!

Guard goose - yeah - if only I could teach them to bite my sister in law!

My question is regarding the cleanliness of the coup? We live in the country and they roam outside during the day for a while, but I have to put my dogs up - I don't trust them. But, I'm not a pig or anything, but how often do I need to clean the coup where there are 8 chicks and 2 goslings? And should I disinfect? Is there a danger of them being around droppings? thx, jennifer
