Yes, you need to find a way to do that, possibly with something solid that runs under the gate- or make a wood-frame one that you can staple mesh to...check the pic under my door space on the link above I think you can see the mesh runnung under the space where the door will be. Use wolmanized for that. I'll have detailed pics for you soon.

Yes, my gate area has a 2x4 on end across the space. I did not mention, you should secure the wire on the ground to the bottom of the fence. The 2x4 at the bottom of the gate gives you something to secure to.

It sounds like you have good wire and a good plan. Make sure you also use latches that aren't easy to open, also. Raccoons use their paws like little hands.

You don't have to make the door sill as tall as I did, of course. You just need something on the bottom of the door frame to attach the wire apron to.
