Best overall book for newbie to backyard laying hen flock

I agree, it is a good book for starting out. It has been around for ever, so you could probably find a copy at the library or pretty cheap at Half.com.

My daughter likes Pocketful of Poultry with all the color photos of many different breeds.

I read some of those but I also loved "City Chicks" ! It has some great info on biomass recycling and how chickens are not just for food--they are part of a much larger ecosystem if you let them.....changed my whole veggie garden as a result!
