Best Rooster, Worst Rooster

I have a white rock that is calm and gentle. He doesn't attack people at all, he will jump at other runner up roosters, He is a larger older fellow. He is fairly quiet, but eats like freaking pig..all day long. Eat and eat and eat...chase the hens off of their food and eat and eat and eat.

The meanest roo I've ever had was a Cochin Bantam, McStud. He started flogging me at 3 weeks. Thankfully I got rid of him. Right now I have two Cochin Bantam chicks (5 weeks) who are not aggressive and very passive.

And you really proved my point about it not being a breed thing. Cochin bantams are known for being very friendly, passive roosters, in general. I see them recommended all the time as being docile roosters. Aggression tends to be really more of an individual thing with roosters, though some bantam breeds, like the Belgian D'Anver roosters, seem to tend toward aggression. Wow, flogging at 3 weeks old! Had that happen to me with a two week old d'Anver once.

First of all, you cannot go by breed to determine temperament to any degree of certainty. Secondly, small children should never be allowed around roosters due to the hazard of them losing an eye to a rooster jumping up to flog--it's not really the rooster's fault in that case. Children have jerky, sudden, movements and are loud by nature. They can make the calmest rooster nervous. Even the sound of my neighbor's infrequently visting grandchildren several hundred feet away, yelling and screaming, puts my Isaac, a super friendly and easygoing rooster, on edge.

A rooster is like a bull or a stallion, just in a smaller, more agile package. And you'd never allow small children around those, right? Same deal. Best to keep a fence between them until the children are older and can be taught how to handle the rooster.
Well said! Sage advice!

My meanest rooster was a Barred Rock that acquired a few names. Kim was his first name after my sister, supposed to be a girl. Second name Kim/John my sister and her husband turned out to be a rooster. Kim/john-il turned out to be a mean rooster. Dinner got tired of his flogging. Beautiful rooster and very tasty.
Good for you! The right cooking method does wonders!

From one old chick to another, you sure have some lovely looking birds! Your rooster reminds me of my RIR boy in behaviour. So good! Unfortunately, his 2 sons were the worst! Don't know what happened there. I also had a SG Dorking roo that liked to eat feathers off the other birds. He would just go up to one & yank out a beak full then eat them one by one. He used to be the first to start a fight & would usually forage far from the others. His crow sounded like an infant crying. Weird bird. First to be culled in the meat flock.

My silkies are all very well behaved, Klingon, the boss used to peck my hand when I put the feed down but now he's a gentleman and doesn't mind being picked up at all.

The worst roo was one we had when I was a teenager, no idea what breed but Evil Cuthbert would attack whenever anyone entered the coop unless they were armed with a broom which he had learned to keep his distance from.

I never had any problems with any of my roosters. I had the most problems from 2 very aggressive HENS that would bully the other birds and fly at my face if i got near them.

All the roosters (I have 6) are very friendly and calm and easy to handle.

The inlaw/outlaws had a game rooster I called Doctor. Two seconds around him and you had to go to the doctor. He was so mean, he'd fight his reflection. Then the feisty fellow made the mistake of going after another the inlaw/outlaw's custom Camaro. He hopped on the hood, started to crow, and saw himself in the windshield. He attacked his reflection, scratched the paint, and was served for dinner three days later.

Nobody but nobody messed with the inlaw/outlaw's custom Chevy, including the Doctor.
