I am trying to get a pair of geese as pets, I will not be breeding or eating them but raising them as loving pets, bonus if they can watch the house too. Which breeds are more loyal, docile, quiet, and not aggressive? Are the ganders more aggressive than the females? What genders should I get for two geese? Thanks for the help.

Buff geese are very docile and non-aggressive. I believe all fowl should be kept outside so they can be happy, run around, scratch in the dirt, and swim in ponds. That's where they belong!

Thank you for your reply. I am a big bird lover and my place does not allow dogs or cats, so I would love a goose instead. :D I also do keep small parrots so I know the kind of care birds need and they are a lifelong commitment. I just would like a companion pet that's similar to a dog in size and personality, if that makes sense. I also plan to have diapers for them (yes I know I have to change them a lot)

If you're not interested in breeding I would stick with females!

Do you have somewhere they could spend the days outside...or these would be indoor all the time? I don't mean to come off as harsh, but geese really aren't meant to live indoors full time. They can get Vitamin D deficient from lack of sunlight, and the majority of their natural diet is grass and weeds. I hope you'll reconsider buying geese as indoor pets.

Keeping a goose inside would be about as hard as housing a poop throwing chimpanzee, your house would be destroyed very quickly. Waterfowl are happiest when they have fresh grass and allowed to range during the day.

I'm planning on keeping a pair this year as soon as I can get hold of some; They will be allowed inside the house and I even have goose diapers at the ready for them but generally they will be staying outside in the garden where I will have a 190 square foot walk in run for them. I don't use the garden on that side of the house so they will have approx 300 Sq feet of free space in total.

I personally don't think it would be fair to keep an animal like that as an inside only pet, not only for the mental wellbeing of them being outside but given that their main diet should be grass I don't see how you could feed them properly unless you decide to lay turf in your living room - I know you can raise them on pellets alone but that just doesn't seem right to me.

I would consider discussing the matter with your landlord before you acquire geese. I have a farm and even in a farm environment ducks and geese are notoriously messy. I really don't think your landlord is going to be okay with this, and then the geese could suffer when they need to be re-homed.

I can certainly understand your desire for a pet, but I agree with others that it is important to consider carefully the feelings and welfare of the animals involved.
