Betta Fish Dying

I've moved him from in the bathroom and have added something that adds beneficial bacteria. I'm doubtful it will help, but it's better than not doing anything.

Nope...found him dead this morning at the bottom of the vase. I had a warranty on him, so will be taking him back. Darn...

Bettas need to be able to go to the surface to breathe. Get rid of the cute little fish/plant idea, unless you want to have to keep replacing the poor fish every couple of weeks. I kept a female Betta from Walmart alive for over 4 years, so it is possible!

DS and I had 8 at one time, and they all lived over 2 years, one almost 4. The plant on top might be the issue, Bettas like to come to the top to breathe, and my DD told me she has read where its considered cruel to put that plant on top of their bowl because of that.
It's also a fallacy that they eat the roots or something off of them. I fed ours every day and they knew when it was time. they were always at the top waiting for it. Its such a shame that they have to live virtually alone because of their temperment. I had some that were so friendly, I could actually rub their little backs.​

A friend of mine bought a 15 cent goldfish at Wal-Mart that thing lived for 7 YEARS! The thing finally went blind and couldn't see where it was going and died. Felt bad for him. All the other fish they ever got to keep him "company" he would use as fishy snacks. EVEN ANGEL FISH! He grew to about the size of my fist!

I bred bettas that I got from petsmart, had about 50 babies that I gave to friends and family. Kept 7 of them myself, one of which is still alive after 4 years. 2 others lived to be 3 and a half. I had probably 300 to start with, made a lot of mistakes, like knocking over the jar I had put them in while I was cleaning out thier tank. Then they got sick and a lot more died. I tried all those medicines and water conditioners and the ones that lived I decided not to try to rescue with all that stuff anymore. Just let nature take its course. I found out that all you need to do is clean them out regularly and put a little aqarium salt in the tank or bowl that you have them in. Dont wait until the tank needs cleaning, keep it cleaned at all times. And dont forget the aqarium salt!

I was able to keep a Fantail Goldfish from Walmart alive for 2 years (he was one of the original four goldfish that I started out with). Unfortunately, he (yes it was a he, I witnessed him spawning with two females that I bought

) died of dropsy like all of my other goldfish.

A lot of people don't know that you can keep bettas with other fish, as long as the other fish are not aggressive or have super flashy fins. I have my betta in with three cory cats and some platies and they get along just fine. Surprisingly, bettas are usually not the agressive ones in the tank, especially since they are so slow with their big fins. Its usually other fish you have to worry about picking on the bettas.
