DS and I had 8 at one time, and they all lived over 2 years, one almost 4. The plant on top might be the issue, Bettas like to come to the top to breathe, and my DD told me she has read where its considered cruel to put that plant on top of their bowl because of that.
It's also a fallacy that they eat the roots or something off of them. I fed ours every day and they knew when it was time. they were always at the top waiting for it. Its such a shame that they have to live virtually alone because of their temperment. I had some that were so friendly, I could actually rub their little backs.
A lot of people don't know that you can keep bettas with other fish, as long as the other fish are not aggressive or have super flashy fins. I have my betta in with three cory cats and some platies and they get along just fine. Surprisingly, bettas are usually not the agressive ones in the tank, especially since they are so slow with their big fins. Its usually other fish you have to worry about picking on the bettas.
