Big Girl is limping! Help me, please!

As far as I know, the common practice for vegans who run animal sanctuaries (or those who keep rescued chickens) is to feed the eggs back to the chickens, sometimes encouraging them to get into the habit of breaking the eggs (for) themselves.

This way the chickens benefit from the nutrition of their own eggs.

I've never heard of "fixing" a chicken so she can't lay eggs and I highly doubt this is a thing; it makes no sense at all.

We don't know if OP has spoken to the sanctuary people; she referred to them as vegetarians and not vegans, which doesn't indicate much accuracy.

The sanctuary owner is full vegan. The story about her didn’t mention fixing, but if OP spoke with her, I wouldn’t doubt it.
Kathy, do you have a link to the story?

.

Some people do "fix" them for various reasons, but mainly to stop ovulation when a hen is suffering from a reproductive disorder.
A couple of "options" I know of would be to give Suprelorin Implants. Some have had the Oviduct and Ovaries removed. Both have risks and I'm sure are expensive. I can't imagine a sanctuary doing either unless they are getting a lot of funds and/or volunteered services from a vet.

No, I didn't actually talk to these nuts in person, but I do believe they fix the hens to not lay eggs. Rowdy Girls Sanctuary in Arlington, Texas; you can check them out yourselves.

One big reason I'm really considering them now is Big Girl's limp is worse, her leg looks a little crooked. Mom's not wanting to spend the money to take her to the vet. The Arlington nuts would be quite willing to spend a fortune on having her x-rayed or have surgery if nessecary.

It's top joint that is sticking out, she's walking kinda crooked. We're figuring it's either a popped joint or it's broken. But there's no swelling or discoloration. She still eats and drinks just fine.

You have a photo of the joint?

If you feel the sanctuary is run by nuts, then why would you send your chicks there?

By nuts I mean they don't believe in eating animals and they'll spend a fortune on vet bills before euthinizing them. But a vet bill for Big Girl is going to cost just too much for us, and this Rowdy Girls place will happily spend the money to help her. I'll get a pic in a minute.

In this last photo, that's Big Girl in the middle holding her right leg crookedly. It's horrible when she walks.
