BIN -12+ Mixed eggs for fun - Colored Egg Pack

Kaylee I got a hydrometer from Lowe's that is meant for the house. It is a small white electronic one that keeps high and low temps and humidity. It may not be super highly accurate but for humidity you get a wide range of acceptable readings. I try to keep around 40% in the beginning but if it is off by up to 5 it will still give me a good air cell. I like it because I can tell if I had any temp spikes while I was away. I also keep two lay on the top of egg thermometers in there so that I can count on accurate temps between the 3 because temp is way more important than humidity as far as keeping a narrow range. Humidity is important but you have more flexibility with range.

But is was somewhat cheap, has the hygrometer and gives me high and low peace of mind.
one issue i had before, with my first (and only!) hatch, was that the humidity of the air around the incubator is generally from 75% to 90%, as I live down in the south right on the lake and gulf. What do i do to *lower* humidity? I tried laying some moisture-absorbing pads but it didn't make much difference.

is your incubator inside? Most air or heating systems keep housing even in the south lower. You could use a dehumidifyer for a room or closet that doesn't get opened much. I know I keep my incubator in the spare bedroom because it keeps it from drafts and inconsistent temps letting my little giant remain more consistent.

yes, it was in the warmest room in my house, our den, since we never used it. i suppose next time i could try a dehumidifier.
i set 5 eggs; 1 was infertile, 1 was a quitter, 1 died in the egg (had a severely crooked beak and couldn't hatch), 1 died after hatching (was hatched fine, but her hip join locked up and she died within a day), and the last was Littlefoot.

That is a bad hatch that was 25% of those you set. They don't count after hatch even though the chick died.

Do you heat and cool your house? Also don't place near a fireplace it will cause temps to fluctuate.

yes i know its a bad hatch. it was my first one and the hydrometer that i had did not work properly. we also lost power a couple times, and when my family came to visit they unplugged my incubator to move it, and didn't plug it in again. its a miracle that Littlefoot hatched and lived, against all odds. the room i had the bator in was the only room where the temp was even and level. if and when i find my bator, i will set it up in my walk-in closet (we live in a different state now). i may try the dehumidifier if we have the money for one, but i doubt it. i am going to try to buy some chicks instead, on November 11th. There is a chicken swap here on that day, and maybe ill get lucky and there will be some RIR lol

Yeah today my marans laid so this is very slow that is about 2 a week. I'm just happy she is still laying. I know my older girls are finishing up a molt but she was born in December last year would she be molting.

Anyways.... Happy she is still laying just slow.

As a flock they are laying well enough to collect 14-18 eggs in 2-3 days for shipping. Individuals are having on and off spurts. One americauna went broody. So the other two are laying fairly well. The green egg layer lays almost every day. The marans is about 3-4 a week. The reds pretty consistent. The rock and rock mixes are sending some eggs. The speckled hen has either changed her egg pattern or hasn't laid one in a while. I have found that most of them changed a little as they come out of molt. I have a dominique that is laying well.

I just sent out 16 eggs today. about 7 or eight EE eggs, 1 or 2 marans, cherry egger, a dominique and some barred rocks.

Here in florida I found last year they laid through the winter.
