And just to show white on the bodies, here is an example of one of my roos. Although white or silver is allowed on the boys, but not any copper or gold. That would be a serious defect. This also shows the big comb I seem to have in my line.

He is certainly very good looking. Mine have a bit smaller comb, closer to a medium sized comb. It doesn't seem to freeze off like my lighter breed boys sometimes do up here in the mountain north. I do love my weather hardy Marans!

Hi new to this thread. Can anyone tell me why Blue Birchen Marans chicks are so expensive from Greenfire? Are they that good? Are they of the quality a breeder could work with? How many would a person need to buy to get a good breeding trio? Any advice would be well taken. Cleve

i'm not sure but instead of purchasing through the hatcheries you might do better to search online through the facebook chicken auction sites. I can give you the names of some if you'd like. They have blue birchens quite frequently actually. A lot of people that are bidding on the marans are into the coppers or a black based bird so you can get the blues for a good deal on the auctions pretty often.

Birchen look a lot like black copper at the start, just replace all the copper/brown with white/silver. I recently learned on my Birchen Facebook group that the APA wants Birchen Marans to have light lacing on the upper breast, so that's new.
