Birchen Marans Thread

Pics
Thanks everyone. They are a work in progress for sure, but am happier than ever this year seeing the growth from them. Some of these chicks are from a mating of solid blue girls or a splash hen to a male that is a split for gold and silver and expresses the gold particularly strong. The nice part is that every one of the offspring, minus two have been silvers.

Vicki.....nice birds!

question..... I have a birchen pullet with silver coming in on her chest.... what does that mean? can she be used for any reason? she is not showing color anywhere else yet. about 3 months old.

I may be pretty desperate she may be my only birchen pullet for a long time.

not sure let me look. if not I will get one tomorrow. finally figured out a way to post pics from my phone.

Silver on the chest is basically the same thing as Black Coppers getting copper on thier breasts. I know some people say if you use a male wilth color on the chest it may add more color to female hackles if they are lacking. But I don't know what would happen on a female. If it wasn't a lot, my opinion I wouldn't worry. It's hard adding the right amount to females anyway. The offspring probably would express it. These are guesses though.

I do cull for that in coppers. really wanting to understand genetically sort of what is going on. I am thinking there might be a penciling thing there. something is causing it and if I understand it I might can work with it.

not afraid to cull or breed her really. she may work better in a project pen than the Birchens.
