Bird Aviary Chat Thread

Thank you. It happens and we try to learn from it so we do not repeat our mistakes. We always second guess ourselves, we should have checked that box, we should have pulled that chick and hand fed, should have, would have.. Tears you up, but you learn and hopefully it doesn't happen again or if it does then you deal with the problem in a better way.

Every one seems to be happy in the aviary and there's eggs every where which is a good sign. We traded out the buttons in the main aviary for new ones that we hatched and we sterilized and cleaned every where with some aviary cleaner that you can buy. I have no idea what's in that stuff but its bird safe and it removes dropping just by simply spraying then rinsing it off.
Cherry finches finished there nest rebuild and that's got at least 3-4 eggs and the hens sitting so that's nice to see.

Really nice when every body is happy and there no major or problems to fix.

I don't have any pet birds (yet) but I hope to eventually and when I do, I also wanna build an aviary either for them to live in permanently or just go in to spread their wings sometimes.

But I just found this. First one is the bird room, has traditional cages but they also flew around the whole room and it's a beautiful bird room.

Then they moved and built this. And ohhhh I am sooo envious lol absolutely amazing set up. Though it must have cost a lot lol

Do you think it's possible to build one outside?

If you have a winter plan then you can build outside. I think its healthier on the birds to get real sun light and fresh air (minor risk due to wild birds etc) but at the end of the day it depends on your budget and available time.

Thanks, that makes sense :)

So what might a winter plan be? Boards for the walls or something or heat or?

During winter they need to be kept in draft free area with heating that allows them to get cold with out getting to cold. A heater that keeps the area above 45 . If you keep them heated they will not grow the feathers required for the cold weather so any accident like a heater being unplugged on a cold night would be real bad. I only have limited experience with cold weather aviary's from my time in the uk. There it was standard to have a shed with all of the nest boxes inside which connected to a large outside flight via small windows. Maybe someone could link you to a aviary that's designed more for the area you live in.

Thanks for the help! Those are all good ideas, especially the window part. I was thinking more a three sided thing or large door but they probably need it more closed in that that.

I also wonder if it would be better to build a shed type thing or to just build the fence and cover it with boards, removable for summer. Probably would be best to build a shed in case of bad weather?

Here it can get below freezing often into the 20s or occasionally lower. Fahrenheit that is
