I am trying to buy my chicken, Hildegard, a crop bra but it I don’t know what size to get her; chicken or chick. She is a seven week old Isa Brown and she is not gaining weight like her sister. Anybody have any ideas?

A seven week old chick should not need a crop bra unless she's trying to make a fashion statement.

Please tell us what symptoms this chick has - state of her crop, besides not gaining weight, that lead you to suspect she needs a crop bra. Usually, a crop bra is needed on an adult hen that has lost her muscle tone on her chest wall and can no longer support the weight of her crop.

Her crop hangs down and does not empty her food into the rest of her digestive system, it fill up like a giant balloon and does not empty by morning. I took her to a vet and the vet is the one that said she had a pendulous crop and that surgery would probably not help. So it’s notmreally me “thinking” she has one so much as me being told she has one. Also, while I do care about her and am becoming attached to her, at the end of the day she is not a pet to me, she is for egg production for my household so I am not going to pay thousands of dollars in vet bills for this chicken. Period. If I can’t fix her with what I consider a reasonable amount of resources then I will cull her.

Thankyou for helping me, I really appreciate it. I will just order both sizes today then. Do you think the other girls will peck at her if the don’t like the color? Maybe I should just get the brown one and not take the chance, I mean she doesn’t have to look cute in it.

What color is your bird? Mine was brown & black, and the black bra was good. The tan color was too stretchy; it was a different material in addition to color.
