Bird lice!!! How do I get rid of it!

I have a friend who knows a couple who show their birds...they can't have lice or anyother critters crawling around on their birds. What they use is Frontline spray. THey have been using it for a long time now with no ill effects on their birds. My friend now uses it and she said it's the best thing she ever invested in! YOu put a dot of the spray on their neck, on under each wing and one on the top of the vent area. I'm planning on using it too

Did you know that if you write the people that make Sevin Dust, they will tell you that they do not recommend its use on chickens???

How often do you apply the frontline? Is that like a once a month thing??

This year so far has been particularly bad for mites for me anyhow. I have treated them with poultry dust, de in the coop always, and adams flea and tick spray. I also saw this poultry protector spray which is all natural. I have used them all about 4 times this season they have had them. I have gutted the coops and dusted and sprayed every nook and cranny and still get them back. Sometimes it can be a real pain to get rid of them and i am starting to question the DE, If i am mixing it in with their bedding on a weekly basis shouldn't that prevent them from coming back? I don't mean to make the OP loose hope just sharing my hellacious experience with them myself. I can't tell you how many bags of good pine shavings had to be chucked in the trash because of them.

For lice, you have to stop the cycle. There are eggs on the chickens and if you do not keep spraying at least every 10 days then they will hatch and lay more eggs. I use a horse product called Ultra Shield EX, it is made by absorbine. It has natural and synthetic bug killers and works quite well on lice. I just spray under each wing, the back of the neck and the vent feathers.

For mites I use the frontline.

For the horse spray, I don't worry about is as it only goes on the feathers.

The frontline is supposed to be absorbed into the fat of the bird. I don't know if the ovaries are considered fat, so I don't use it on my laying flock, only my show birds.

I don't think you have to stop eating the eggs if you use Sevin dust. I could be wrong. Make sure you re-treat them in a week to get the lice that hatches from the eggs. I don't think Sevin works on the eggs.

I know that this is a VERY old thread, I was searching for lice info since I found some on a new bird that I bought. I thought I would throw in my two cents as a small animal vet tech ( new to the chicken world though!) Frontline spray actually does not translocate ( move to other areas of the body) it is missing the lipophilic ( fat-loving) ingredient that helps it to that. Frontline Topspot moves around to the rest of the body, but the spray just stays wherever you spray it. Also, Frontline does not deposit in the fat layer but only the sebaceous or oil glands in the skin. I imagine this would make it even safer! Revolution however does go into the fat layer. I wonder if Revolution can be used for mites? We can use it for mites in puppies and kittens. That would be easier than dusting your entire coop and chickens! Hope this helps!
