Birds HOT!

One of my biggest hens just laid down and died today... She was take'in the heat harder than the rest for the last few days. Its wear'n them down... Thinning out the weaker ones I guess. Shade, ice water and fan is about all I can do... Not willing to bring them all in the house, and pens with A\\C aint a option at this quail shaq... Bill

WOW!!!!!! I feel bad for ya, Bill....... That goes to show how abnormal extreme temps can take a toll on wild beings, I guess. It rained this mornin', and the sun came out before noon. That made today's heat index about.....heck......I don't know.......maybe 110. But my birds don't seem affected. All the pens are under a big pole barn, and I keep the waterers filled. Good luck with the rest of the flock!

Bill, I am so sorry for your lost. I don't have any quail yet, but I do have rabbits, and I will get a piece of card board and soak it with the hose then I would put it in their cages, they would lay down on them all day. I don't know if quail will do that, but it works really well for most of my caged animals!

i know it might sound absurd but what about putting ice infront of the fans so it blows cooler air....i know its crazy, but....arn't we all with our crazy birds?

Well nothing is dead here. Heat index was 108 today and there was a few trees that fell so we had to take them out to the road. I pulled them up with the four wheeler, then hooked the trailer to it and hauled off the bedding from the coops. Then I rode back and fed and watered everything. Rode back to the house and the thing started over heating. I put it in the garage and turned it off to cool down. The fan ran for 5 hours and when I tried to start it up to haul some feed up to the quail the fan drained the battery. So I had to pull start it and let it idle for a while. Then I mowed the ditches, now I have to mow the rest tomorrow. This heat is killing me.

I lost a young hen a week or so ago and I assume that's what happened to her. Knock on wood, I haven't lost any others. Mine can usually take the heat pretty good; they can take the cold pretty good too. What they have trouble with are the temperature swings in the spring and fall....80's one day, 30's the next, 80's the following day....that's what gets them the most.

Keeping icewater for my pen and misting them with the hose when I go out. Knock on wood I haven't lost any but all the birds are suffering
