Bit by the hatching bug ... Marans hatch

I've got a doz Wheaton marans and 8 ameraucacas. This is my first batch in ages. We went with a brinsea, what wonderful technology. The candler is coming tomorrow. I was never very good at candling so when I saw the brinsea candler I had to get it. I'm over sixty and my eyes are not what they used to be.
It is very exciting trying to hatch out these eggs I look at them a couple of times a day and it's only day 8!!! Matt that splash rooster is beautiful. There was no splash available back in the early 80's last time I was raising chickens. I'm looking forward to having some of those
Thank for all the posts about hatching.

Good luck with your hatch....Be sure to post some pics when they escape.

Well, my second attempt at hatching isnt looking all that good. After a quick candle last night at day 10, I only have 13 eggs Im going forward wtih, and of those, I can onlly see something dark... nothing specific. Im thinking between the cold and my roo with frostbite on his foot....he may be slacking at his job.

I'd wait and see until day 21....I can't imagine you can see hardly anything thru those dark shells!

very true...most of the eggs I tossed were the Marans /Orp cross. Only one of them seem to have anything happening inside. One more week to go, we'll see.

You know Matt I went into lockdown tonight and my eggs look 'full'. I hear about all the chicks that wiggle during candling. I never see this...so everytime I candle I get anxiety thinking that the hatch rate will be low. I've increased my humidity tonight but prior was completely dry.

I guess I will know for sure in 3 days.

Good luck!! Lockdown is always a good time. You are correct, even though Ive only done two hatches so far, Ive never seen anything move in the eggs.... just a dark mass.

Not all will move while you're candling....they take naps sometimes, you know?

Sometimes you have to rotate around to find a blob, get it positioned well in the light and wait 5-30 seconds.

Course the lighter colored the shell and/or the better your candler light, the more you see.

Hatching takes a lot of faith, acceptance and patience.
