Black Acres: The chickens that saved me

Pics
Cold! I’m bouncing between the boring, paying job and the coops trying to keep unfrozen water available for the flock. It wouldn’t be so bad if the wind would stop blowing. That just makes it miserable.
Mild today but only today, by Monday -26C... We r in a 'work from home's mode here unless one is essential... It's a hardship working here in the barn office, with the chickens and horses distracting me 😁

I spent a short time living in Colorado Springs. I love to visit, but won’t move back! I suppose I’m a creature of habit and will likely spend the rest of my life in good ol’ Kansas.

I think on the days it’s nice enough for me to sit outside with them, I’ll prop the door open so they can visit and then separate them back out when I go back inside. That way I can supervise and see how things are going and not just spring it on them all at once. I’ll need to add some roosting bars to the main coop if I decide to mix them together. I probably didn’t need to separate them in the first place because they’d grown up together from day one. I just got nervous when the bigs were three times the size as the littles and panicked so I separated them. They literally stand at that door daily and talk to each other so I don’t think re-integration would be hard, but I’d still prefer to do it supervised and slowly.
That was just smart, not a panic. 😉 obviously chicken keeping is in your blood lol.

Drove through Kansas once maybe 2x's, I know it is not popular to say but I thought Kansas beautiful. Couldn't figure out why it got such a bad wrap beside those silly tornados. 😳

Hi gang. Yeah, I was not getting notified either but then saw a post about how to find the threads you follow 🤔 brilliant.
Upper left you have the 3 horizontal bars. Click open, click forums, click watched. Easiest way to hunt your threads down.

So, feeling pretty bad for you folks with frozen water. Think I feel much worse than you do because you guys seem in pretty good spirits. Must be all that youth 😉
So I am sending warmth your way.View attachment 2950626View attachment 2950631View attachment 2950634View attachment 2950648View attachment 2950655View attachment 2950656
My idea of perfect temps are 65-85. We are just about there now. Don't like the hot but not built for cold. Pretty sure my flock thinks those are perfect Temps too!
Oh boy you had to post palm trees.... Bad! Hahahaha 🤣 I have pine trees does that count?

Here are some Canadian visions of loveliness:

I grew up helping on my Grandparents farm. Chickens, geese, ducks, bulls and cattle. During butcher season they’d round up all us kids to catch the birds and hold them. It never bothered me since it’s really all I knew. It put food on the table. We also got to do the fun stuff, like collect eggs and play with the cute chicks. Calving season was always my favorite though. I just love calves!

I’ve lived in KS my entire life except the one year I spent in the Springs. I love it here because my family is all here. We spend a lot of time together so I'm not sure I could ever move. The year I lived in the Springs, I spent many hours driving East on I-70 to visit home. I made the drive at least once a month. But, I digress. 🤣 How I ended up there and why I came home after only one year is completely unrelated to chickens and not a story for the faint of heart.

I’ve always known tornadoes so I don’t tend to get too worked up over them. Heck, when I was younger, I’d hop in a vehicle and chase them. I promise, I’ve gotten smarter over the years! 😂😂

I once convinced my youngest daughter that we were moving to Canada to a remote location where we would rely on Moose as our main transportation. :lauIn her defense, she was young and I can be very convincing. I’m a bit of a jokester. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Hahahaha 😁 too funny!!!

Have to say Moose mash potatoes carrots and turnip and gravy - yummy!

No, ONLY closer to 30, think 28 last count, if I counted correctly. Down side of the revolving chicken door and getting older lol.
LOL I have to count mine because they free range each day and get put up at night. 16 production reds, 3 brown leghorn pullets, 3 brown leghorn cockerells, 8 easter egger pullets and 1 easter egger cockerell. Plus 3 guineas. 34 in all.
