Black Acres: The chickens that saved me

Pics
The thermostat is a constant debate in my house. I keep it 60-62 in the Winter. Husband turns it up constantly but I have a nifty little app on my phone that alerts me so I just turn it right back down and tell him to get a blanket. :lau
Yes! 62 is just right and seriously, wear socks and pants and quit whining 😆😆

I'm glad to know they can live together and tolerate the cold here. I love the Silkies breed.
I put hen saddles on my two silkies for two reasons, 1- the rooster was tearing out feathers breeding them, 2-keep them warm (esp with feather lost).

I’m beginning to think I should get a few hen saddles for the bigs and the littles in case I ever need them. I’d rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

I had my mum make those, if u can sew they r easy to make. My mum quilts so it took a couple minutes for her to run them up.

I can take a pic of them for you tomorrow, let me know (PM me so msg doesn't get lost 🙂)

I’m slowly building up my chicken supplies and meds. What do y’all consider “must haves?” I’d like to be sure I have the essentials on hand. Right now I have Corid, Blukote, electrolytes, and poultry cell.
Oh goodness…I have an entire chicken pharmacy now. I recommend you have on hand Enrofloxacin (Baytril), dewormer, alcohol wipes, vet wrap, gauze pads, Manuka honey (avian vet recommended natural way to aid in healing bumblefoot), Vetrycin spray, VetRx, iodine, Nutridrench, Terramycin, oral syringes, colloidal silver, apple cider vinegar, Elektor PSP and permethrin dust, and pee pads. These are some of the other things I have needed to address various issues including bumblefoot, fowl pox, respiratory issues, cuts, etc. Iodine works wonders on fowl pox sores…I could probably come up with more but these are what I’ve used the most!

Add coconut oil for hachings and new chicks. Helps w lubrication and cleaning pasty butt!
Oh yes! And lubrication when they get an impacted crop! Good suggestion! That reminds me, I would also keep Lactulose of Metamucil on hand as a laxative for impacted crop. My avian vet also had me use crushed papaya enzymes mixed in water as an additional aid for impacted crop. It worked great and they enjoyed the taste! :)

And add something for sour crop like monistat and a cream for fungal weirdness. Vaseline, DE... I use antibiotic eye drops a lot and saline solution, chlorohexidine is fabulous.
But for a starter kit- that I totally wish I had known to have on hand instead of trying to scramble for after an emergency.
Corid, safe guard, poultry vitamins, electrolytes, non-pain neosporin, epsom salt, old towels, 10 mil syringe and tubing (for fish aquarium)
I did get a tool box or my first aid kit.
