Black Acres: The chickens that saved me

The only thing I don't like about this pattern is the fixed elastic. I have never sewn this. I ordered it by accident lol when ordering my saddles from etsy. If you can make it so the elastic slides it will be easier to put on your chooks.

Sorry, switched to phone for photos.

So true, mine have sliding elastic not too bad to put on, I used 10" of elastic.

Good morning y’all! Temps are creeping up above freezing today, but we haven’t reached that point just yet! :weeRight now it’s still cold and misty and the moisture is making the stairs and sidewalks VERY slick! You want to know how I figured this out? Well, I was headed out to open the pop doors and sit out morning rations. I stopped at the shop and grabbed two freshly filled 3 gallon waters and then proceeded around the back to the coops. There is a retaining wall between the shop and the coop so DH built me a set of stairs so I could quit sliding down the hill by the house.

Here’s a few pictures for reference.

So I’m walking around the shop with waterers in hand and an ice cream bucket with warm oats so both hands are full. I begin my decent and on my second step down, my life flashed before my eyes. My foot slid out from under me, the waterers tumbled down the stairs and the lid came off the bucket of oats. Y’all. I found myself on the cold, wet ground, covered in oats trying to remember my name.

I took a moment to assess the damage. No broken waterers. No broken bones. I think I’m good. After collecting my pride I continued to the coop to complete morning chores. The chooks were so happy to see me and I thought, “wow, they really missed me!” But then I realized they were only crowding me to eat the oats off my pants and boots.

I am safe inside now with a fresh change a clothes and under a warm blanket. Pretty sure I’m going to have some bruising (mostly to my ego) but all in all, I think I am okay. I’m laughing about it now. My DH is always telling me to slow down. Maybe he has a point!

I'm always being told to slow down and one day not slowing down bit me in the butt.
One day after it had been raining for a week I was carrying a 40 lb bag of feed down to the coop, my chicken coop is at the bottom of a hill with no grass and the dirt is packed down hard. I live in Georgia so the dirt is mostly red clay and gets very slippery when it rains, so I was carrying that bag of feed down quite quickly as it was cold and I wanted to get back inside, I take one step down that hill and find myself flat on my back with the bag of feed on top of me unable to move cause I hit my hip on the way down and was in extreme pain.

After a few minutes lying there I shoved the feed off me got up, and covered in mud I slowly finish taking the feed down there. Worst thing is, the chickens saw it all, I swear they were laughing at me. What I learned, never walk quickly to the chicken pen after rain.
Edit, hip not hit

Glad you are ok bonewise. Loved the homor in your tale. Pretty funny after the fact I'm sure.
Great stairs @blackacres . Nice of ol sourface to come up with that (lol) Starting to think he may not be so sour after all :fl or at least has some fine moments.
I always think it is not so much the dismount as it is the witnesses. Having my chickens laugh at me would probably change the dynamics in our relationship... especially if I was carrying their feed! :old:jumpy rascals.

Ol sourface usually does everything I ask of him, though sometimes not on my time frame. The sourness is that he grumbles the entire time and then makes me feel guilty for asking. I don’t complain because he does the work. The stairs were all his idea!

I’m so glad the chickens didn’t see my morning spectacle! They were all still locked in the coop but even if they’d have been in the run, the tarps are up for winter. I absolutely don’t want to be embarrassed in front of my babies! Haha

They were just standing by the edge of the fence, staring and making the sound they make when one of them jumps off of something and doesn't stick the landing. So they were either concerned or laughing, I think they were laughing.
